May he rest in peace. Although I'm not christian, I see him as a man who has done lots of good things.
I'm glad to see that his wish not to be treated in the hospital anymore has been granted. He was an old man, it simply was his time to go. I'm happy he wasn't kept alive for two days by all sorts of medical devices; he just died in peace in the Vatican.
Again: may he rest in peace.

He did a lot of great things in the world, and was a religious leader to millions.

It's the measure of the man that brings about such a powerful response. Pope John Paul II was one of the most influential and powerful icons in our culture. One of the most astounding things about him was the way he reigned as pope: he was the "media pope," he had a website, travelled a lot, and utilized television to its fullest extent.
He was one of the most active players in the campaign to bring down the communist regimes of Eastern Europe after WWII. As Pope, he visited his native Poland and openly told the people not to fear their leaders and to have hope. The Pope was a huge symbol of this, not only to Catholics, but to people from every religion. I'm not Catholic, but I still mourn the death of the Pope. He extended his philosophies to everyone, whether they were Jewish, Muslim, Christian, or something else. Even though he rankled Western Catholics with his opposition to materialism and other Western philosophies, or his refusal to ordain women priests, he was still someone to respect and admire.
People need symbols, they need leaders who do great things so that they can look up and be inspired by these acts. John Paul II did all of that, he was a man who inspired the world. His death itself is sad because he has been around, for many people, their whole lives, and it almost seemed as if he would always be there. So while it may not be unexpected, it was a very real taste of reality.

But he was just a man. If I went and did all of the things that he did and I died would the world stop to watch my funeral?

If you were the religious leader of over 1,000,000,000 people, even more knew who you were, and your title carried almost the same weight as President, then yes, I am sure you would have millions of people flocking to see you buried too.

Ok,ok,ok. But if he wasn't a leader of over 1,000,000,000 people and he still did those things would you then still watch his 3 hour funeral with the rest of the world?

Everyone was in mourning when MLK and Ghandi died, so I'm assuming.
Now are you going to say "What if he didn't do any of those things, would you still watch?"

If you knew who they were, you'd know that your question had been answered. Look them up for yourself.

Yes. Very well said, Tach. That's right. Look at how many people he lead, and the impact he had. He was one of the most influencial people in ending communism in Poland and Russia and was one of the FEW people to actually get Fidel Castro to wear clothes OTHER THAN HIS MILITARY UNIFORM. Now THAT says something.

Alright, you don't know THAT? Martin Luther King Junior and Ghandi? Huh? What? If you don't know that, then why are you posting in WN? You seem uninformed, especially with that comment, and therefore you should really GET informed or not post here. At least that's what I think, because I like informed posts. Just a suggestion from a friendly neighbor at STV

MLK=Martin Luther King-Revolutionized Civil Rights
Ghandi=Was able to push the British out of India through peace
Both men did so much more though. What planet do you live in? How do you not know who they are?
Would you be remembered if you did all of those things but did not hold the title of Pope? Unless it was publicly known, no one except the people you affected, would care. If it was publicly known, then yes you would be held in high regard for doing all the things the Pope did.

I knew you were going to come in here and disrespect the Pope, after your views were noted about Catholiscm.

It was just a joke. i don't disrespect the pope, the poor guy hasn't done anything wrong. He, if anyone deserves too go to heaven. If he doesn't, no one will.
Funny, that you of all people knows me so well
My views on Catholicsm do go straight against the Vatican though, ironic isn't it?
