This is gonna make me look like a right dumb blonde now but can someone tell me the difference please. I no protons are the positive thingy in the nucleus of an atom butI don't know about protons. Are they the same thing?

I think a photon is a positive lepton, and it makes up light energy.

Protons are subatomic particles which have a positive electric charge (opposite to electrons) and combine with neutrons via the strong nuclear force to form the nucleus of atoms (except for hydrogen). They have much more mass than electrons.
Photons are the carrier particles for electomagnetic force. What we call "light" is a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which also includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, ultraviolet and X-rays.
The easiest way to keep them separate in your thoughts is to think of protons as matter and photons as energy (even though quantum mechanics treats them both as wave functions).

keep them separate like this:
Protons are what warheads are made of
and
Photons are what holograms are made of.

A photon isn't a lepton, it's a luxon. Luxons are a class of elementary particles which travel at speeds equalling that of light, they therefore have zero mass. A neutrino is another example.
They say "photon torpedo", but that's probably because it was created back in the 60s where more than half of SF was "it sounds cool", unlike today where "it sounds cooler!" is wanted. The only reason to call it a photon torpedo is that, because they carry antimatter, they can be used at warp speeds, unlike phasers. Yet photons don't travel faster than light . . . tachyons do.

They call em photon torpedos because annihilation (which is what photon torpedoes do) means that matter and antimatter *annihilate* into radiaton i.e. photons! So a photon torpedo emits photons. yay.

why does the EMH say photons and forcefields is what hes made of then.

Because as stated earlier in the thread, photons are light.
He projects light and is surrounded by a complex forcefield to allow him to be "solid" and interact with the environment.

EnsignParis,Ensiqn_Vorik posted that because of what Hitchhiker posted.

Well, Ensign Paris is right. The Doctor, and other holograms, are just photons that are wrapped into a coherent shape by forcefields. They're still moving.

Ok simplified version: Photons = light.

I just would like to say that it doesn't make you look like a dumb blonde

Oopsie, I'll correct myself.

Well, I'm not sure what a luxon is, but he said that luxons are a class and photons fall under that class, along with other particles, like neutrions, as he said.

the alevel defrintion of a photo is that it is a small particle that it what light is made of they have no mass have never been seen but expermets can be done to show they exist they also travel at 300,000,000 meters per second which is the speed fo light

Thats probably why they came up with the 'Quantum torpedo'
