Sun Aug 08, 2004 9:38 pm Defiant in the Delta quadrant |
|
This is a thread that is similiar to my VOY in the Alpha Quadrant thread. How does everyong think the Defiant would have done in the Delta Quadrant? The entire main crew and supportive crew is onboard. I don't mean the baddies either. Even Vic Fontain is in the holodeck of it. Do you think there would be any missions they couldn't have overcome that VOY did? Any missions they would have done better than VOY? What are your thoughts?

I think the Defiant would have quickly expired in the Delta Quadrant. Its so experimental and fussy, it wouldnt do well. But I think that OBrien is extremely resourceful, so it would have worked.

i dont know much about it but isnt it a short ranged fighter ship, i dont think that it would have lasted 70,000 ly to the alpha quadrent. It would have won more battles thou

True the defiant would have managed better in battles and those epiosde when voyager an just get through somat like when they go in that asteroid and in the quandtum singularity...stuff like that. But the Defiant is much too slow and i don't think the crew would be able to manage with no holodecks.

It would be a pretty long shot bit I bet It would have managed. At least with O'Briens help.

Yeah, I think in some cases it would be harder. He we don't know for sure the Defiant doesn't have a holodeck. I'll check it to make sure though.
It would tear through the Kazon, Hirogen, and Malon though.

I'm sure the Defiant class doesn't have a holodeck, because it's too space-consuming.

Of course it doesn't have a holodeck. It is a ship only built for battle "With no luxurys"

Holodecks can be useful for battle training. A holodeck may be near an armory for improving fighting.

I dont think if it would lasted long. I think it will be a slim chance if it survived. But who knows.

It's a good ship, but I don't think that it's large enough or powerful enough to stand up to all of the challenges in the Delta Quadrant.

Indeed. Voyager was destroyed a couple of times, and only restored through some fluke in temporal mechanics, or because it was a duplicate that got destroyed, et cetera.
But that would be an interesting fan fiction to write . . . rewriting all the Voyager episodes to feature the Defiant.
Plus, Admiral Sisko's futuristic shuttle wouldn't have any room to dock in that puny shuttlebay!

Remember the Voyager was a Nova class I believe. Thats a science vessel. Lotsa scanners. The Defiant was a 'how many phasers can we stick on this?' ship. A klingon one in other words. Only with decent technology.
So the Defiant woulda kicked ass, but then they would have wanted to scan something and failed. Thus, much death.
I say we send the Enterprise-E over. That would rule.

First of all it was an Intrepid class. Second the Defiant has good enough scanners to nearly match Voyager. Defiant was made after Voyager, so that implies it has the latest technology. Enterprise-E would get screwed in the situations where they had to go through a tight space.

Not to be a nitpick, Founder, but wasn't the Defiant-class built before Voyager? Sisko referred to the Defiant project starting as early as 5 years before they got the ship, with the overgunned and overpowered prototype in development.
Granted, starships normally takes years of development before the prototype before it sails out of drycok, but didn't Sisko get his Defiant before Janeway got her Voyager? (Referrs to stardates, etc.)

Maybe you're right about that. I think VOY left in 2371 and the Defiant was brought to DS9 in 2370. Something doesn't fit though. Because VOY left before they knew about the Dominion. Yet they left a year after the Dominion was discovered.

The defiant was built in 2369. But there were lots of problems to the ship. In 2370 the defiant was taken to DS9. It is classed as an escort vessel. (Short range and used for scout missions and escorting frieghter convoys)
Unofficially it is a warship. But for battle and thats all. It has limited sensors and engines. The only real good thing about the defiant is it's armaments.
"It has no luxurys, no families and no science labs."
The defiant is too slow and poorly equiped to make it in the delta quadrant. The defiant couldn't even make it to warp 9 until season 6.
The first intrepid class USS Intrepid was built in 2370. USS Voyager was built in 2371.
The intrepid class is a science vessel. It is one of the fastest and has the most sophisticated sensor arrays in the federation fleet. The Intrepid class's engines are designed to run for 3 years without having to refuel.
For it's time the Intrepid class is "state of the art"
It's obviouse that the Defiant is just too ill equiped to handel such a long voyage.

Yeah, but those problems are all probably just because it's an experimental starship class.

Anyway, the point is, that the Defiant would get along a lot harder than the Voyager.
