^^It doesn't really bother me either, but for others, it comes dangerously close to forcing the Christian religion down our throats. <-- 'Our' meaning everyone who says the pledge.

In my opinion, dont take it the wrong way cause I am not being harsh if I am let me know. I don't want to offend nobody else on here. If you don't want to say it then don't but let the ones who does like it do. Nobody has to force anybody. Gee I sounded a little nicer lol.

I agree.

The saying doesn't bother me, even though I am an atheist. I see it as a formailty, a tradition .... sayings like that our like the Queen of England, a nice little reminder of the past without any real meaning. Then again, I can see why others might be offended.

I may see why people are offended, but this is a good example of a good, non-Secularist athiest. I say that it's a tradition, and yet I also see it as a good MEANING.

^That's fine and all, but the thing is, although it might not have been intended to force or sound forced, some/many will perceive as being such.

Ok, guys, I think that people should have better things to worry about than two words in the pledge. They can leave out those words if they don't like them. Don't waste important peoples time whining about this, and don't waste our taxpayer money on this small little thing when we could be using it for much more important stuff.

^Agreed. Now that the horse has been resuscitated and flogged to death again, I hope it can be laid to rest this time.

Are you saying that there should be no hearing?

Yes, this whole thing is just a waste of time, its two words, if you don't like it, don't say it, you don't have to take it to court. I mean think about it, its is two words that have been in there for what...50 years about....has there been some big religious revolution because of it, has this issue just so terribly violated peoples rights, I doubt it. All this is going to do is waste our tax money. Its almost as bad as that 9-11 hearing.

I really can't see how you think this topic is so trivial. Unless there is a hearing, and a decision is made, people will continue to push for the words to be removed. There needs to be a hearing so this issue can be settled.

Ok, I guess your right, just gets on my nerves that people would care so much about a few words that they dont even have to say.

To them, those "few words" are against their constitutional rights,

Yes, the Secularists believe that, but my interpretation of the Establishment Clause implied in the 1st Amendment is that ONE SPECIFIC religion, i.e. Christianity, cannot be established by the state, but God applies to virtually ALL religions...

I guess we'll just have to wait to find out,

Not to mention, as you said "VIRTUALLY all religions."

Dont you all see that this nation was founded because of the fact that we were being forced to believe what European Nations told us to? We fought for our freedom of speech, our freedom to worship the God of our choice, or even choose to worship no one.

Have a little respect for those who willingly gave their lives to give you those choices.

I don't think they should be taken out. When I grew up, I was raised to believe everything that I was told about God and religion and America. Then I grew up, and began to question not only my faith, but everything I was told about the country. I started by breaking down the pledge of alleigence. Since I've done that, I have a new perspective. I put my break down of it blow.

I pledge alligence -- I'm with my country

to the flag -- symbolic of the country

of the united states of america -- just what it says

and to the republic -- my country, who rather than run by a monarch or dictator is run as a democracy by a president

for which it stands -- the foundation my country is built on

one nation under God -- one unified nation, under the principals that all believe in

indivisible with liberty and justice for all -- we will not break apart, and we will give you your rights.

That is a very good way to break it down. I, personally, believe that God defends us, but I like that way to put it out, for those who don't have a "faith in God, or any God."

Y'know originally I was leaning to the side of concern for the words in the American pledge of allegiance, then I re - considered. The reason I re - considered is that I remembered that in Canada'a national anthem there is a part (God keep our land, glorious and free) that can arguably bear the same perceived problem. Then I started thinking about if people wanted to re - word it, and I didn't like it. I am by no means a religious man, but respect the side of tradition. So now I am in the camp of "If you don't like it, then don't say it". We'll see what happens tomorrow.

Wow, this is an old topic. But anyway, I think that the words "Under God" should stay in the pledge. I mean, if someone doesn't want to say it because of their beliefs, they don't have to say it. And how is listening to other people saying it hurting you if you don't beleive in it? Right, it's not.

The funny thing is, the guy who brought this up lives in my city I believe.

Personally I believe it should be taken out.

I do understand that the majority of America is religious and believes in there being a God. I have no issue with that.

My problem lies in the fact that our Founding Fathers designed this country to be secular. They believed that everyone should have the right to practice their own religion, however it should not be brought into the government.

This makes perfect sense, no religion should be surpressed, but absolutly no religion should be used in the government or used to justify actions taken by the government.

I do not believe we should take it to such extremes as France by banning all religious symbols. I just don't think the phrase "In God we trust" should be in our national pledge.

Just putting my two cents in

Actually, some of the constitution was based at least somewhat biblically. They didn't appear to want it that secular. Certainly considering the introduction to the Declaraction of Independence. (Even though, and I do note, the Declaration of Independence is not a legal document)

Although I prefer secularism over religion in many cases, I think it should stay.

Just like, as someone brought up, our Canadian anthem has "God" in it, so can the American Pledge of Allegiance. Remember that the word "God" is not defined, so therefore to the atheists out there it could simply be a three-letter word that is synonymous with a nonexistent postulated omnipotent entity. For believers in a "God", it can mean their "God" of choice. It's a matter of perception.
