How is it that in some episodes the doctor is shown to be "solid".....but in others...he's not...like the one where they go to help the hologram program on the alien ship....the hologram swings a weapon at the doc and it passes right thru.
I don't think the doc has the ability to turn his forcefields on and off at will.

I believe he may if he's connected to his mobile emittor, but it may also be a principle of force. If too much is applied quickly, the force fields may give like a safety protocol. I do remember another episode, it may have been when the hologram tech went out of control against the Hirogin(sp). They could make physical contact with you, but you couldn't hit them.

Yes...I guess the safety protocol explanation is pretty plausible.

Maybe, also, that at certain speeds or unpredicted moves the field emmiter cannot adjust fast enough to maintain solid matter. (Or maybe the producers didn't have enough funds to make him solid for that long and had to edit matter out)

It would be interesting to see what happens when the doc is in bed with someone...

Actually he has control over it remmeber the episode were he was explaining it to tom paris and pressed some computer buttons and told tom to hit him and his hand passed through and then pressed some more buttons and slaped tom paris. It was the episode were Neelix got holographic lungs and he was explaining it, it can either pass through the photons or it could be made solid.

So in other words, he does have control of his forcefields.

The doc did once say to someone ( Id on't remember who) that he could intract with patients as a real being could. In other eposides he is able to walk through walls wothoust his moble emmiter. I belive his programing is responsible for this.

In my opinion, the designers of the first holographic Doctor, figured that there would be times the Doctor would be needed where a physical Doctor could not get to. Therefore, the holographic program, is able to determine when the force behind the doctor's projection needs to be lessened.

In one of the espisodes they specifically show him change from "solid" to just visible by doing something on LCARS.

PostSun Jul 28, 2002 10:34 pm    Quantum Tunneling

Whenever I get a Job Im gonna buy alot of books!!!

If they used Quantum tunneling To get through a barrier

Then perhaps they could project his forcefield because once it goes through the barrier I do believe it will go about however thick that barrier was past the barrier.

Anyway if they Could "Tunnel" Past the Wall using that system however they do it... Then that could explain how the Holograms and the forcefields could go through solid objects like walls and such.
Read up on Quantum Tunneling yourself if you want more Info.

I believe that centiant/somewhat centiant (sp) (be able to think and act on own), hologram like the doctor are given the ability to control there forcefields for different situations. Some situations are when attacked by hostile forces, and internal surgery. My opinion

holograms can be programed with forcefeilds, but they can turn them off and pass through things. With a good control matrix, they can reactivate the forcefeild on only some parts of thier body; like when the insane hologram reached inside B'Elanna and messed with her organs.
