I say....
Archer: Quick thinker, and he is doing well without training.
Janeway: Follow rules most of the time, and is strong, for she was able to keep her crew stable.
Picard: Strong on his rules...
Sisko: Loves the 1900's and is the kind you don't want to get on his bad side.
Kirk: Jokes around, however able to get out of problems..

I think Archer needs some self-confidence. He seems too concerned about making alien visitors happy and making sure everyone gets along. He seems to keep trying to avoid conflict at all costs, which may not always be the best move as a captain because others will see it as a weakness. My vote for best captain would go to Picard.

I agree that archer would need more slef confidence, or maybe he just cant "think outside the box". And he doesnt seem to have much experience before he became a captain, that would help him. My vote for #1 captain goes to Janeway.

That's true. And I would judge him less critically than the other captains because of that. But still and all, it's hard to believe that there was no other human available to command Enterprise that couldn't do a better job of it. I imagine the first time an astronaut went up to the space station or flew in a shuttle or something he had the necessary skills and attitude for the job. I can't help but think Archer just isn't "captain material" and I have a hard time believing there wasn't someone a bit more suitable available.

I agree totally. Some people are borned to be leaders but Archer is not one of them. He doesnt seem to have any extraordinary skill that makes him captain material. And he seems to have problems to see what other people thinks. He is to stubborn and concerned with what he wants.

He hoefully will get more skilled as time goes on, but his general traits will probably still be there. H is to ignorant and cant really see others points of view.

Right! I agree with you. He is stubborn and his pride and mental baggage get in the way of proper command decisions. For example, in "Breaking the Ice," a good captain would never have let his pride interfere with agreeing to let the Vulcans help when their help was necessary to save the crewmen trapped on the asteroid. He should not have needed to hear a talk/lecture from T'Pol before agreeing to let the Vulcans help. The safety of the crew should always come before personal pride and stubborness and trying to prove you are independent.

Exactly. How would he feel if he was down there? He probably have wanted them to get the help from the vulcans as quickly as possible. But he will hopefully learn from his mistakes and become more captainlike, otherwise he will go down as the worst cptain in history. Okey not really but I would not pick him as a typical leader.
