Wow. This is...shocking. I don't know quite what to make of it. Good for Mary Cheney, though.

Because it's the vice-president's daughter, and she's going to give birth to her baby and the granddaughter of the vice-president is going to have two moms is why it's shocking. I don't mean anything offensive by that - I really like Mary Cheney. The concept is just shocking, that's all.
Again, good for her, though.

It's just so shocking when someone is gay?

Oh please, we all know that's not what he was saying. Let's try to keep things in context and use a little common sense.

^ Well, call me stupid, but I don't know what he is saying.
I see nothing shocking about it, and I still don't know why anyone would.

Well, it seemed obvious to me that he meant that it's shocking due to VP Cheney's stance on homosexuality. Especially since he said "good for her" twice,

That, the fact that he's in an administration with opposition to homosexual marriage and so forth, and the fact that this is the daughter of the vice-president. Not that she's gay, for I've known she was a lesbian all along, but those things. It's just shocking is all. Nothing more.

Good for her! There are some FAAAAAAR Right (I didn't know such a place existed) whackos that are like ... condemning the child and calling her a monster. Sites are springing up all over the web. Its troubling.

That is troubling. I may find moral disagreements with what she's doing and may not be partial to the idea of a child being raised by two mothers or two fathers, but I wouldn't go that far in the least. I am sure that her child will grow up pretty well in the Cheney family.

The only thing I find troubling is that people take so much time out of their day to condemn someone only because they are unfortunate enough to be in the media's eye. :/

I'm honestly surprised that Dick Cheney hasn't publicly opposed this, or said he will not support them.
Maybe this can show to people that a child with two mothers can grow up just fine.

You're surprised he's not going on the attack against his daughter!? Isn't that a little much?

kids doing 'ok' with one parent is not 'ok' to me.My parents split up when I was 9.My mother moved 1 and a half hours away from my dad.I went down for 'access' visits once a month.
I dont think back on my childhood with the thought that I did O.K.!My life would have been a lot better if I had regular contact with my dad.
No another woman as a substitute dad or second 'mum' would not be just ok.A child needs a man and a woman as parents,my opinion based on my own direct experience!

My aunt was widowed at the age of 32. Her husband died of a brain tumor. She had 2 children, ages 3 and 4 months.
Her kids grew up without a father. Yet, they survived and thrived. Why? Because there were other men in their lives--uncles, grandfathers--who acted as male figures.
Parental figures are--of necessity, sometimes--not only the biological parents. This is the advantage to extended families. There's no reason to assume that a child of gay parents will not have loving adults of the opposite gender to provide that balance.

That is one thing that has made me accept the idea of homosexual couples as parents. If the children have other persons in their lives that can accomodate for the lack of a parent of the opposite sex, it can work out. That's why, though, I think that in order for a homosexual couple to adopt children it should be required that they have someone of the opposite sex who can act as a parental figure for the opposite sex of the parental couple.

How on Earth do you require something like that? It isn't as if just because someon is homosexual they cut themselves off entirely from the opposite sex. I can't think of anyone I know who is gay and doesn't have someone they consider close to them that is of the opposite sex.

My neighbor's are lesbians, and they have a son. (Adopted from overseas). Because of their sexuality, their families cut themselves off. The kid is in my classes, and is one of the brightest people in the school. He didn't have a single male figure while growing up.

Then it should be easy for them to meet that requirement, shouldn't it?

Okay, so he's bright. But that doesn't mean that he's necessarily got that balance. Only a male figure can give him that.
