Giuliani takes step toward '08 bid

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, a moderate Republican best known for his stewardship of the city after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, has taken the first step in a 2008 presidential bid, GOP officials said Monday.

This is some interesting stuff. It seems like several moderates are coming forward. I'm glad. We need some moderates in the White House.

We have one. His name is George W. Bush He's what we real conservatives would call a faux-conservative. Maybe he's not a moderate, but he's not a conservative either.

I don't care about him being moderate or conservative so much as I want a good, decent, somewhat conservative man in office. A man like Guiliani.

Guiliani for President!

I've been reading about Guiliani, and seems like a good choice. Pretty Liberal Socially, and slightly right fiscally. But not too far.

Wow. I think we've actually pretty much reached an agreement on a candidate! My God. What is this world coming to!!!

Yeah. I am surprised. I'll have to look him up a little more. But he definitely looks like the Moderate that we haven't had for 6 years.

It was Bush, not Clinton, who ignored the warning signs for 9/11.

^ And he was a horrible mayor and treated his wife like crap.

Now, granted, what happened in his personal life shouldn't be an issue. But when your wife finds out you're getting a divorce by watching an interview on TV, well, you've made it public.

As far as tough on terror, well... he can talk a good game. But he's never really been in a position to prove himself there.

Please define "good" and "decent."

Is it good and decent to have a public extra-marital affair, and then announce to the city that you're getting divorced before telling your wife?

If George W. Bush is a true moderate, I'm afraid to think of what a Conservative is.

Guiliani rubs me the wrong way...I worry that he'll take advanage of 9/11 to an excess if he runs. People need to look past that and actually look at his track record.

For the record, I aplaud how he handled 9/11, I just don't think that it should define his ability to run a country.

It does show that he can perform well in a crisis situation.

But not everything is a crisis situation. There's a lot of long term strategy that goes into running a country.

^ Unfortunately, his day to day management of the city was dismal. The middle class ended up fleeing Manhattan--myself included.

Not defending him here, but his personal life shouldn't affect how he governs.

Guiliani is way too liberal to ever get my vote. There would need to be some major changes of opinion on his part before I would even think of voting for him.

And although his personal life is seperate from government, it still is a great indicator of how he handles things. It gives us insight into how responsible, trustworthy, loyal, etc. he is.

Just look at his records on spending, illegal immigration, and medicare, for starters. I wouldn't necessarily call him a moderate, as I kinda said in my post, but he's not a conservative either.

As for Guiliani, I know he's got some skeletons in his closet, so to speak, and has a not-so-good record, to say the least, on personal issues, but that was in the past, and otherwise, I think he'd be a great president. Not that the past can just be shut aside, but still. I'm looking to the future here, and in terms of what this country needs, I think Guiliani's the right man for the job.

I fully support him, as do both my parents - and I'm a diehard conservative.

Normally, I'd agree with you, but by telling the city he was getting a divorce *on the news* before telling her... Well, he made it a public issue.

He used his position as mayor to inflict cruelty on his wife. I don't see that as a quality I'd like in a president.

I don't know what his intentions were, but I don't think you can say that his intent was to inflict cruelty on his wife.

I think if your husband told the city of new york about a divorce, before you. That is extremely cruel.

It is certainly cruel, yes, but not necessarily done with mal intent.

What does that show you about his judgement then if he could not realize the cruelty of this? Either way, this would seem to expose a character flaw. Of course, I'm sure you'll find one in just about every candidate, so how much you want to read into this is up to you.

A certain amount of character flaw is going to exist. No one is perfect. However, this particular flaw (I think) is just not acceptable for someone in pubic office.

Santorum Will Not Run for President

Even though he lost his Senate race in a landslide last week, some conservatives hoped Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) would run for president in 2008. But the Philadelphia Inquirer reports it's not in the senator's plans.

Said Santorum: "Absolutely, positively not. Absolutely not. My wife would throw me out of the house if I do anything in '08."

Kansas Republican eyes presidential bid

Sen. Sam Brownback, who is considering a White House bid in 2008, said Monday the Republican field has room for a "full-scale Ronald Reagan conservative" and pledged to make a final decision next month.
