PostFri Sep 08, 2006 4:27 pm    California "Sexual Indoctrination Bills"

Quote:
(CNSNews.com) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed what conservative activists call a "homosexual indoctrination" bill. But two other "gay agenda" bills await his veto pen, conservatives insist.

The bill vetoed on Wednesday, SB 1437, said California public schools may neither teach nor sponsor any activity that "reflects adversely" on anyone because of their sexual orientation.

Full Article

The first two bills I think are being skewed by opponents of the bills. I do see a need for the schools to prevent descrimination against homosexual students, and I don't think they should be teaching that the practice is either good or bad, it just is. Sponsoring an anti-gay club or some such is about as bad as sponsoring a racist club. However, the third bill gives me pause. I don't like the idea of mandatory classes on gender relations. I don't even like that my college requires one such class.

All that this bill would do would cause even more reason for overzealous activists to sue others.

The only one that really should not be vetoed is AB 606

Ridiculous, all around. An anti-gay club, yes, is equal to racist, but there is no need, in my opinion, for gay rights education in the schools or homosexual education period. Once they hit Middle and High School I suppose it'd be good to try to put forth an idea of tolerance and acceptance of it, but lessons on it, or a class on it? Not a chance.

EDIT: I'm glad these bills were vetoed.

I agree with the Governator on SB 1437--the wording was too vague.

As to the others... AB 606, I hope he signs. GBLT students need to be protected from discrimination in schools. But AB 1056 just introduces more mandatory "tolerance teaching," which has gotten absurd.

Honestly, if he signs 606, he'll get my vote in Nov. I didn't vote for Arnold the first time around, but the man has grown on me. Of course, what I like most are the things his party can't stand, but hey... he's a Californian first and a Republican second. He wants to do what he thinks right for the state--even when it breaks with his party's stand. That's refreshing.

Religious electives in the United States? They're not devoted to one religion, not as far as I know. They're mixed courses. But I don't believe we're talking about a homosexual elective, which would be a rather pointless course anyways.

Huh. Why did I think you didn't live here?
And of course, that makes sense. Of course the San Francisco area would have an Islam elective. Does it have one for Christianity, the most prominent religion in the country?
And that's pretty rare in the US nonetheless, and doesn't provide justification for a class--particularly a required class--on tolerance for homosexuals and whatnot. But I suppose if a school wants to have an elective that's their choice, but the elective should not be forced on the schools by the government or made required for graduation.

Do you support the AB 606 one? Which would protect homosexual students from discrimination.

I suppose that one's okay, but I don't think it's really necessary to do that.

It is. There is a lot of bullying about orientation at my school. It's sad.

I'm surprised, considering you live near San Francisco, quite possibly the most liberal city in the nation. I live in a more conservative area of Colorado and I have yet to see any bullying whatsoever towards homosexuals.

You shouldn't need extra laws though, schools are already supposed to have strict rules about discriminations (Enforcment is anoter story, belive me, I know)

It's like illegal immigration. We don't need more laws--we just need enforcement of those laws.
