What if Chakotay was captain instead of Janeway. Janeway was first officer. Would Chakotay will be a better Captain? I think it equals out. I guess I am more of a maquis kind of gal. Please no bashin of them. Just mature conversation would do fine. Opinions fine cause I love to hear opinions, even though I may not agree with some.
Would Chakotay get the crew home faster? Or just the same? Don't get me wrong, I am still a big fan of Janeway.
I probably kick myself later for creating this topic, but I would like to know what ya think.

Okay, I went from initially liking Chakotay to getting really really ticked off by him! I don't hate him but he just... ugh! I think its Robert Beltran... he's just blargh!!! I am waaaaaaaay too much of a Janewayite to think that anyone else would ever make as good a captain!!!! But if you want a decent reason then I think it's purely because I think that Chakotay would rely too much on Kathryn's opinion if she was first officer so she would essentially be captain anyway!

I disagree with the both of you strongly. He is a great actor. People just misjudge him cause they don't really know him.

^^^ I agree. He's a really good actor.
But I do have to say that from the CHARACTER'S standing point, he would rely TOO much on Kathryn, so she would be captain anyway. LOL...
Yes myblackrose, I agree! LOL...I liked your hyperventilate thing...LOL...

I don't think he would rely on her. He is a smart man. He don't need any help from her.

Well forgive me if I'm out of line but I would personally consider having watched 5 seasons of Voyager to be enough to make a reasonable judgement about his acting abilities! I mostly blame the writers for killing the awesome character that Chakotay originally was but I still find Beltran to be too stiff as an actor...
I don't deny that he is smart or capable but I believe that he would still rely on Kathryn's opinion too much... he respects her, that's not a bad think but it works better in their current command positions. Kathryn just has that little extra quality that I can't put my finger on that I think is necessary to get Voyager home. I don't argue that Chakotay would be an excellent captain of Voyager under normal circumstances but the way they are, stuck in the Delta Quadrant, I think that Kathryn is more capable. Like I said, I can't exactly put my finger on it but whatever that subtle difference between them is, that's what he's lacking.

Look, you don't have to get pissed off of someone's opinion. I asked the admin to lock it. It looks like this is going to get out of hand. Fine you don't like him. you don't have to bash him. Nope I am not mad at anyone. I shouldn't created this topic.

There is nothing to forgive. It was just the way you started out your first sentence. But, hey I will always be a Chakotay fan. I missed judge him once. But, I was wrong ... Everyone has an opinion. I am not mad.

Chakotay would be a better Captain, hands down. Not as many crewman would have died from their superior officer, like under Janeway.

Once again, i agree with Founder. Like i said before: Janeway had to be killed in the First Episode of Voyager! I will stay with this saying, because it is the truth. Chakotay is, and always will be, better then Janeway.

I think Chakotay would make a good captain. Just as much as Janeway.

Maybe just as much, but not better than.^^^
I agree with black rose above...Chakotay was a good character. And b/c of the writers he turned to an ok character. Would the writers have kept him interesting and more on his toes about thing, I would say he might could do as good as Janeway. Now, I have seen every season of Voyager and concur with her.
Yes, Kathryn does have that something that makes it. Chakotayd doesn't have it. He has it in his own way, but it's not the same.

Hmm...Interesting topic.
In the "Trek universe" so to speak, Chakotay would have probably been very suspicious of the Federation crew at first, but learned to trust them. And I think he would have run the ship very differently (not held the crew to Star Fleet principles and such). It would have been a Marquis ship, and Janeway would have come to blows with Chakotay about it. She likes to be in control, and she wouldn't pick a fight in front of the crew, but she'd definatly have a thing or two to say about it with Chakotay.
In terms of the TV show, it would have been very interesting. It would have given Robert Beltran (as unpopular as he is at the moment) more of an opportunity to show off his acting ability as the writters would have paid more attention to him. On the other hand, Kate Mulgrew strikes me as being a bit more forceful and outgoing with producers and such (I think she's had a lot more experience with TV than he has) and would have butted her character in a bit more than he did.
Wow. I had a lot to say about that! And now my fingers are about numb because it is cold in here...

I'm sure the show would've been canceled, if this were the case.

Just because Robert Beltran is not popular with the people on here, doesn't mean he is not a good actor. Yes, I am disappointed with him of what he said or didn't say about the troops at the convention. But, I don't know if it was true or not. I don't go by here say no more like I use to.
In my opinion he is a good actor. Chakotay would have made a good captain.

If chakotay would have been captain there wouldn't be any show now would it? Chakotay would have tried to get back too the alpha Quadrant with the caretakers device(or ship).
he wouldn't have diverted off course as much as janeway did.
Plus, i think considdering some of the decisions Janeway had to make too make it go right, i think Chakotay would have gotten everybody killed. numberous times.

It is just a question Lionhead, it is not like he was captain in the series lol but thanks for your opinion. Real nice though... Nice post.
I don't think he would have gotten everybody killed. I believed he wouldn't put with the way Janeway treated him and throw her in the birg. But I am a fan of Janeway, I shouldn't said that. I am for J/C together but she did hurt him though...... If this didn't make any sense it is cause I am dead tired. When do I make sense? Lol
