Moderating Opinions

Recently some concern was brought up about how moderators were handling certain issues and rules on this board.

Spam and off-topic discussions: is it fair for us to ask that off-topic discussion be taken to PMs or moved to a new thread? Should "spam" only be considered sales spam, or also massive amounts of pointless posts (eg: attempting to respond to every post in "This or That?")?

Editing posts: is it reasonable for Mods to be able to edit posts in which they feel there is an issue (other than tagging the post with [locked - TM] to notify who locked the post, etc.), or do you feel that this is unreasonable?

General Modding issues: Occasionally a Mod gets in an argument with a user, if they feel the user is getting out of hand, should they attempt to warn or reprimand the user, or should they ask another Mod to handle the situation? From the discussion between the Mods, it appears that WN is more vulnerable to this issue than other forums - this is particularly because WN is a more volatile forum than the others.

Another subject that came up while discussing this is the matter of PMs. The Mods have gotten the impression that when reprimanding a user, it's generally preferred that we PM them rather than publicly reprimand them because of embarrassment. But it's also brought up an issue of communication and impressions. Sometimes other members involved in an argument don't realize what's happened behind closed doors and continue the argument, or get the impression that the Mods have been excessively harsh with the user in question. So, do you feel that keeping reprimands to PMs is a resonable system? Or should be be more public when dealing with reprimanding a user (why we're doing so, what the punishment is, etc)?

What are your opinions on these issues?

Also, for anyone who feels like there is pressure to "say the right thing", you can post anonymously in this forum. And this discussion isn't to talk about specific actions of specific mods, but just how moderating is handled in general.

First I would like to point out that posting "anonymously" as you put it is completely useless, as you all can see our IP adressess weither we are logged in or not, so to truely post "anonymously" one would have to go to a new computer like at a public library or such.

second, the mods are too harsh, and quite frankly the power is going, or has gone to a lot of their heads


and third, it would be wrong to warn or repremand anyone who posts their opinions about the mods/admins here, (as long as its not really offense, like curseing and that) as the topic is all about our opinions
