Mon Apr 09, 2007 6:52 pm Iraqi Shias protest in holy city |
|
Quote: | Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Shias have demonstrated in the holy city of Najaf, calling for US-led troops to leave Iraq.
The protesters were responding to an appeal by cleric Moqtada Sadr, who branded US forces "your arch enemy" in a statement. |

If the Shi'ites really wanted us to leave they would quit the fighting, cooperate with the US to get things going smoothly, and work with the Sunnis to make the government situation stable and worth success. They appear to not want that, however.

Sadr wasn't planning to go along with the surge anyway. He just didn't want a direct confrontation when the US entered Sadr City because he'd lose right out and he needed time to haul his sorry ass to Iran. I knew this was coming.

These groups hold a 2000 year old grudge. They aren't going to work together anytime soon.

So you want a people who have been at odds with each other for years to the point where it is now a blood feud to just sit down and reconsile their differences?
It's not going to happen. Get out of there, let them have their civil war then try to help them pick up the pieces.

...And yet everyone keeps telling us "Stop the violence! Let's negotiate!" Guess it doesn't apply to anyone else?
What happened to "NO WAR!"?

Wow, one of the few times they did something peaceful. Instead of leading that army to kill people, they did the democratic thing and protested. I'm impressed.

War is occasionally necessary to force change. War is unnecessary when the war is not ours to fight. We should stop sending our men in, but the Iraqis may need a war for themselves. Be nice if they didn't, but I don't see that happening.
And Founder has a really good point.

Well I'm glad you see that war is necessary sometimes. Now we only disagree about whether or not we should be fighting it. Simplifies things nicely. Even though my message wasn't specifically directed at you.
And yeah, at least they're protesting by screaming their larynges apart instead of ripping each other apart.
