Theories on how the universe will become...well...nothing.

Well, I have heard of two theories on how the universe will end, but I have thought of a third.

The two I have heard of, one of which is quite popular (The Big Shrink Theory), says that the Universe is expanding all the time (because of The Big Bang), but at one point, the gravitational pull of all the matter in the universe will become too great, and it will collapse in on itself.

A second theory, one not so popular (not sure of the name), says that all the stars in the universe will die, some of which turning into black holes, will eventually suck everything into trillions of black holes littering the universe.

And finally, my (not really mine...I'm sure someone else has pondered this as well) third theory. I've been reading this book... Hyperspace by Michio Kaku, and it says that protons actually decay (in theory). Yes, you heard me right, the once thought stable proton is actually unstable, just like the transuranium elements. The thing about the proton is that, the half life of proton decay is something like 10^33 years...a number much, much, MUCH greater than the life of the universe (which is somewhere in the range of 10-20 billion years I believe). So yeah. What I am proposing is that eventually, all protons will decay, leaving no possibility of matter, since the proton, a basic particle of matter, will eventually cease to exist.

Well, I think Christie Golden has explored these things in the last Voyager books before the relaunch. She called the theories, "The Big Freeze", and "The Big Crunch/Squeeze".

well, its clear too the fact that we just don't have enough brain mass too ever figure this out. we never will so you can stop trying. every theory I have heard so far (hundereds) are total rubbish, i mean one worse than the other (like the big bang theory). The point actually is that i have too prove it so you're theory can be the next one too be 'assumed' because thats all we can do. The theory that has now been pointed as the one is a theory that is obviously flaw but closest too the actual thing than any other. So that theory is now 'assumed' but no theory will ever be the truth. Doesn't matter how complicated you make it (like the protons *beep* or the black holes).

Hm, I don't like those 3 options. I saw a show on tv, and they also talked about the Big Bang. The had a new theory: the Big Bang wasn't the beginning. It was just that the universe was very compact in the beginning, and the they could collide easily with eachother. And so: Bang.

It's called the String Theory. It also explains that Quarks aren't actually quarks, but they are strings. Anyway, too much offtopic.

I'd rather like the idea that the universe never 'dies' but, well, that's not very realistic. If I h�d to choose I would pick theory number.. 2, because it wouldn't necessary mean the end of the universe. I mean, were does that black hole lead? It has to go somewhere (i'm pretty stubborn

)..

The Earth has roughly 5 billion years left to live. In the last few million years of its life, the sun will slowly expand, increasing the surface temperature of the terristerial planets. It will engulf Mercury, then Venus, then Earth, and perhaps Mars. Eventually it will implode upon itself and become a cold, white dwarf star.
