Life Must Go On...

It was amazing how everything had fallen into place so suddenly. Everything had been perfect but something had suddenly snapped. Nothing was the way it should have been. Everything was blown away like sand in a storm.

Miral lowered her eyes, glancing down at the floor. She had cried for days and still the tears came.

Why did this happen to me? She thought. What did I do to deserve this?

Yet she knew that the event would have happened sooner or later. She just hadn't expected it as soon as it had come. The young woman sighed to herself, glancing out the window. She would miss them more than anything in the world.

Miral took a few steps towards a small table and picked up a small picture frame. A picture of Tom Paris, B'Elanna Torres and herself as a child sat in the frame, the faces of the three smiling brillantly. This was too much for Miral and she cast the picture frame away. The glass shattered and the tears came again.

" Why did you have to leave?" Miral cried out, sinking to the floor, pushing her hands into the glass shards. Her skin broke against the glass and blood spilled onto the black floor. " You didn't deserve to die." She whispered. " I miss you already." She whispered, putting her bleeding hands to her forehead, running them down her face. Miral sat on the floor, sobbing, her tears mingling with her blood as they cascaded down her face.

The day was bright and sunny, nothing like what it would turn out to be later that evening. Everything seemed to be going perfectly. The Paris family had been transfered to another vessel were Tom would work at helm, B'Elanna would work in engineering, and Miral would work as an ambassador. How could anything go wrong? The family was together (for once) and the ship they were choosen to work on was perfect.

" We're going to have so much fun!" Miral beamed at her parents. " And I actually KNOW some of the people on this ship."

" It was very kind of Harry to hire us on." Tom glanced at B'Elanna. " I'm sure he's a great captain."

" After living with him for seven years on Voyager, I'm sure he's a great captain." B'Elanna cut in. " Now... you better not get in Harry's way, trying to take him back down memories lane and all." Tom averted his eyes and glanced around.

" Who me? Try to distract Harry?" Tom tried to sound as innocent as possible, but B'Elanna fixed him with a dark stare. " Alright... I promise. I'll do my job and that's it."

" Good." B'Elanna smiled a bit, satisfied.

The small family pulled up to a port just inside San Fransico. A large ship sat docked there, its silver haul gleaming in the morning sun. The ship reminded Tom and B'Elanna of Voyager, but it was smaller, sleeker.

" I bet that baby can run!" Tom whispered, glancing up at the ship. " She's beautiful."

Here goes his obsession. B'Elanna thought quickly.

The small group made their way onto Harry Kim's ship, the USS DarkQuest. Once inside they made their selfs at home. All three of them had no idea what sort of adventures were to come and what sacrifices they'd have to make. They just enjoyed themselves for what time they had left.

The ship was a lot larger then they had expected once you were inside. The walls were sleek and grey in color and the bridge was immense.

" Tom!" Harry headed towards them from the bridge as the family appeared on deck.

" Harry!" All three of them chimed in together. Tom embraced his old friend quickly, smiling broadly. Harry embraced B'Elanna gently and turned his attention on Miral.

" Well... you have grown up." He smiled at her. " I remember when you were about 5 years old."

" Many years have passed Captain." Miral smiled back at him. " I hope to serve your ship well."

" I can already tell you are." Harry told her. " Have you seen your quarters yet?" Harry asked quickly, turning his eyes on the other two. Tom nodded.

" I guess we can live with them." Tom joked. " I think we'll be stopping in the mess hall for a bite to eat though, if that's ok with the captain."

" By all means." Harry nodded. " I'll see you all later tonight."

The family made their way to the immense mess hall. Outside the stars shot by the ship as she took off towards the Beta Quadrant. Miral glanced outside, watching the stars fly and for the first time a feeling of dread washed over her, like something was going to happen. That was the first feeling that she had. Something was going to happen and it would cause everyon's life to change forever. She turned to watch her parents and she bit her lip. This was something best disclosed only to herself. Miral turned once again to watch the stars.

" Miral." Tom's voice broke through her thoughts and she turned to face her father. " The Captain wants to see us." Miral nodded slightly and left with her parents towards the Captain's ready room.

The inside of the ready room was clean, airy and comfortable. Miral studied everything about the room.

" Mr. Paris!" Captain Harry Kim stood from behind his desk and headed towards the Paris family. " I wanted to tell you about what our mission is at the moment. We're investigating an incident out in the Beta Quadrant. A Starfleet vessel was lost out there a few months ago and hasn't been heard from since. We're to go and retrieve the crew."

" If they're still out there." B'Elanna put in. Harry nodded at her.

" I want you, Tom, to be on bridge first thing tomorrow morning. B'Elanna I want you down in engineering. We've been having some problems with the core. It's being tempermental and I'm sure you can take care of that."

" With pleasure captain." B'Elanna beamed, smiling.

" Now, Miral." Harry turned to her.

" With all due respect sir, I don't see much need for an ambassador on this mission." Miral locked eyes with Harry for a moment.

" That's what I was going to ask you. I want you on bridge with Ops." He told her.

" But I don't hold rank and I certainly don't do ops." Miral started.

" I want you on bridge at ops." Harry repeated. Miral nodded, giving in. " I have plans for you Miral." With that Harry waved his hand to dismiss them. Miral left, her head down. First day on the job and she was already at odds with the Captain. Just like her parents.
