Love the original from the 1930's. Some of the remakes were pretty good too. I must admit, the trailer does look appealing.

Trivia: Robert Englund appeared in a Phantom of the Opera movie in the early 90's.

I've seen the musical twice on Broadway and it's awesome. The movie looks pretty good! Granted it won't have the same "chandilier actually falling right above your head" or "feeling the intense heat when the stage erupts in to flames after the graveyard scene" or "the phantom actually coming and singing in box 5 where you're sitting" effect. but I have high hopes for the musical-movie

omg you make me SOO excited to see the musical again!! I've seen it 4 times now! OMG SOOO GOOD!!! I get to see it again in January and i CANNOT WAIT!! But i totally agree w/ you how the movie will be nothing compared to the actual musical itself!

The final trailer is out!! The beginning of it is the same as the Japanese trailer, but there's a bit more that's different. They also have actual singing in this trailer. Anyways, go here to the official site, and then you can click on "trailer" to be able to see the new one. I can't wait till they get actual clips from the movie posted.

I'm going to see it in an hour and a half. We'll see... the article in the paper was titled "see Phantom for spectacle, not story" and it got a B. but our paper rarely gives good reviews. so...

I have to wait till the 10:10pm show to go see it b/c my mom wanted to go with, and she won't be home till around 9ish.. grr! Oh well... better sometime than never at all.. besides, i'm enjoying the anticipation. I bought the tickets yesterday though.. hehe... never hurts to be prepared!

Alright, I just got back from it and... I'll have to agree with the papers. It gets a B... maybe even a B minus. The singing wasn't nearly up to par with where it could have been. I don't know... maybe they have trouble finding singers that can act on film. But Raoul was a creepy woman-type. The Phantom... I actually liked him, but everyone knows that no one lives up to Michael Crawford. How could they? Christine was pretty good, I'll give them that. She reminds me incredibly of my friend Nola who will also be a famous singer someday

. Haha... my brother's girlfriend really liked the Phantom though, she said "he was hot and this was the first time I thought I would actually stay with the Phantom instead of going with Raoul." The cinematography sucked, though.... as did the coreography IMO. And... last but not least... the chandilier dropped at the wrong time! What the heck!? Anyway.. like I said before, nothing beats seeing it on stage. That's why it's a musical play, it's meant for stage, not film. But it was pretty good in parts. B-.

Yea i think i have to agree with you. I will give it between a B and a B+ I think. First off NOTHING beats a live performance by far!! There were times where i wish Christine's voice, and a few times the Phantom sounded stronger. Raoul was actully one of my favorites for the singing aspect. Very good if you ask me. The rest were wonderful too, but I really liked Raoul's voice consistantly throughout it. Omg, i totally thought the Phantom was gorgeous too. Haha, I think i may have gone for him over Raoul too.

Here's some stuff that bugged me:
-Raoul and the Phantom were talking in American accents
-i thought the very beginning w/ Carlotta singing before the backdrop came down was almost too busy, and it was really hard to follow w/ the new owners coming in and all, and Carlotta deciding to quit - even knowing the story by heart, it was hard to follow on screen (just that one part though)
-The chandelier falling at the wrong time (although it did work out. I was wondering what they were gonna do in the Maqsuarade song b/c i knew there was a line about it "to a prosperous year, and the new chandalier" They changed it to "and all friends that are here"... good cover up!)
-They took out the 2nd "notes" scene. They had the Phantom speaking what he wrote in his note in the 2nd notes scene put into the masquarade scene. That too ended up working out really well. What they did do though that I didn't like, was after the graveyard scene, all of a sudden they flash to Raoul saying "this is what we're gonna do, i'll be in box 5...etc" and then that's the end of that. Right as Mdm. Giry was about to start her lines, she opened her mouth, and they ended the scene. I missed how before in the musical, like it was all the principle cast together, and Christine is sitting there w/ all these people arguing about what they should do about the phantom, and then what she is going to have to do (really w/out her say). Then she bursts out "This is mad!" I'm SOOO happy they didn't take out her stuff though where she says "twisted everyway what answer can i give? am i to risk my life to win the chance to live......." That's my absolute most favorite part and I would've died had they taken it out.
-They also took out the rehearsal scene of Don Juan, before Christine goes to the cemetary.
- I wished they would've included the Phantom's little threats that he says all calmly like it's no big deal: "a disaster beyond your imagination will occur.
- I didn't like only one "notes" scene

I liked:
-How they went back and forth between old "black and white" Raoul and Madam Giry, kinda him reminissing, then back to the story.
-The hall of mirrors was added in from the book!!
- I liked how everything the Phantom did, all the tricks and whatnot, were given an unspoken explanation on how he did it, like he really was just a human, and made him a much more believable character. What i mean is like w/ the mirror trick before the song "The Phantom of the Opera", you see a short clip of Meg afterwards seeing that the mirror is a 2way mirror, and it slides. Also like when the the Phantom switches the mouth spray, or whatever that is, before Carlotta gets the frog in her throat.... simple explanation of how that happens. Another is you see him cut the ropes to the chandalier - it doesn't just magically fall by itself.
- I liked how it was explained more on where the phantom came from. I already knew the story behind it all from the book, but it was just nice to see it on the big screen, so other ppl could understand. People always ask me questions like "where did he come from...blah blah blah." I liked how they really emphasised that Mdm. Giry knew stuff about the Phantom too, but like she silently knew.
- I was curious as to how they would do the 1st "notes" scene where they sing "Prima Donna". They took out completely some of the voices that are a part of the whole big group singing together, to really emphasise what one individual would be singing at the time. For the big screen, and for those who don't know the story, or what's being sung, i think that was a smart idea.
-I loved how when we suddenly just heard the phantom's voice, not sure of where it was coming from (such as: the Phantom calling to Christine in the graveyard.... amongst other scenes) it was kinda spooky and ghostly, and in the theatre w/ the surround sound, it was just really cool!!!
-I loved the trap door w/ the phantom and christine in "The Point of No Return".
-I do have to say that every single one of the major songs were absolutly wonderful!! "Think of Me" "All I Ask Of You" "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" "Angel of Music" "Phantom of the Opera" "Point of No Return" "Prima Donna"..etc.. The only thing that bugged me about a few of them were the dynamics at only certain parts, but other than that... wonderful!!!
- I really really did love the ending on how Raoul got the monkey to bring to Christine's grave. Omg, i teared up on that part. That was one thing i really liked!! I also like how you saw the rose w/ the ring around it sitting to the side of the headstone too - very good touch.

So yea, overall I enjoyed it. I would much rather see it performed live on stage, but it is nice to have a movie of it out now. It is something I will be buying when it comes out on DVD. I can't say it will be one of my favs, just b/c i've got the images and songs of the live performances still and always with me, but it is something that i will be able to appreciate and enjoy.

I know i have more to say about it, but am too tired to think of anything else now. When it comes to me, i will post it. So yea... that's that!

I know what it's called and what the lyrics are. But he takes her down to the lair while they're singing it. The movie made it look like the Phantom had actually written it in as part of his Don Juan Opera.

really?! In all the musicals I saw of it, he never took her down till the part when right after he starts to sing an excerpt from "all I ask of you" and then she tears the mask from his face and they disappear from the stage. That's what i always saw in the musicals anyways. Have you ever gotten that really big awesome book on the complete POTO musical? I've borrowed it a couple times from the library. It has some sweet pictures in there and also shows how the phantom's makeup was applied, and all that jazz. Anyways, it also has the entire script in there, and explains what the character is thinking and doing whilst whatever is going on. Anyways, like you know right before Christine come on stage for Don Juan, Ubaldo (i think that's how u spell it or whatever) disappears behind the curtains. (obviously u know this all). Anyways, Christine doesn't know it's actually for sure the phantom till after they together sing

This is a random fun thing I remembered driving home from work today. So two of my very very good guy friends from dance, David and Jeremy (they're brothers), well, their mom's brother was the french horn player in the original POTO w/ Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. He's on the original recording, and did all the shows w/ them. Isn't that cool?! I teach his daughter (Sarah) in a few of my classes. I've met him before, but it's normally Sarah's mom who drives her, so I don't get to see him. Next time I do though at our next dance performance i'm gonna be like OMG!!!!!! Like he knew ALW. Insane huh!!

I was talking with my dad on the way home from the movie how awesome it would be to actually see the original cast. Wouldn't that just blow you away?

But yeah, then my older brother Dan and I were talking after the movie while we were waiting for everyone to go to the bathroom and he agreed with me, the "point of No Return" was never part of the Phantom's Don Juan opera. But I think you're right. They must do it differently in different shows.

omg, it would be absolutly the coolest to see the original cast!! I wish that they would make a video of one of the stage performances... like the group that's touring the usa right now or something. I want like a stage performance video lol!! They do that for so many other shows, i don't get why they won't for this one!!

i've seen it twice now... and the movie is slowly growing on me. Trust me I will FOR SURE be buying it when it comes out - i just much rather prefer the live stage performance!

PS! My friend from Germany (i just got it today) for Christmas sent me a huge Banner (made of some clothy material) for this movie!! It's floor to ceiling tall, and almost my arm length in width!! It's SOOO cool! She works at a theater, and got it there I imagine!! One more thing to add to my collection!
