Tue May 04, 2004 10:30 pm And they haven't thought of this why? |

Why aren't there any torpedo replicators? Seems like ships are always running out of them

My assumption is that there probably are, they just use up a lot of energy..... Otherwise Voyager would have run out after season 2 probably

Tss, Dan, you dork. That is a good question. Perhaps they didn't have them for the simple reason that it would make sense, (Like seatbelts, )
(And we all know about Voyagers magic torpedoes, )

I have heard or had read from somewhere that voyager only have a limited amount of 38 torpedoes altogether. (im not sure maybe 32)

yes voyager had 38 type VI photon torpedoes
i dont think they could replicat them cuz all the curcutry and everything
i think they have to replicate everything indivitdually and them manually assemble it

Voyagers torpedo compliment was 32, as was stated in scorpion. That limit was somehow overcome however. Maybe they found a way to design a lowergrade photon torpedo that can be fabricated without needing resupply from starfleet

no u watch 'the cloud' (episode 6) they say voyager has a complement of 38 photon torpdoes ((plus 2 tri-cobalt devices)) so all in all and intrepid's cfull complement of photon torpedoes is 40

Just to play Devil's advocate: Maybe there is a limit on the size and/or complexity of what replicators can make. Maybe things like torpedos can slowly be built by personnel using replicated parts.

The Intrepid class has 38 torpedos, but they can replicate, just that it takes a LOT of time and energy... they resupply their energy everytime they get to a space-station and so on... That's probably why they never run out of them...

-Fire torpedo tube 8!!!
-Uhm, Sir, we only have 5...
-Well fire them, I don't care how many it takes to get that thing blown up...

Never thought of that, but you're right i think, each time their torpedoes are about to run out, they would just go to a space-station.

well it would actually be 40 torpedoes it could carry dont forget there was the two tir-colbalt devices which aren't supposed to be apart of "voyagers arsenal"
yeah have you ever realised that when ever picard hadto use a torpedo he wouldn't just use one or two but he would use like 12 and then at the end of the episode he would go to a startbase (well almost every episode ended in enterprise going to a starbase)

Yes, but that's beyond torpedoes... doesn't count... I'm talking 'bout the normal ones...

Torpedo's are matter/anti matter explosives. You can replicate them, but I think the warhead material is too unstable to be replicated. Having said that, they managed to teleport the Omega molecule....

I read this in one of the DS9 books and in the star trek encyclepedia.
its the main rule of replicators that also prevents them from replicating hand phasers and plasma and such.
The First Rule Of Replicators:
They Can Not Replicate Energy
And the torpedoes matter/antimatter is considered energy.
so, thats also why you can't replicate living things.
you would have a body, but no energy in the brain, nerves, heart, muscles, and so on.

And? A photon torpedo is a miniature STAR inside a casing. How do you replicate a star???

maybe there was a law made saying you can't replicate large powerful weapons. It could be starfleet protocol

Indeed, that would be bad,...VERY BAD. All it would take would be one starship defecting, and there goes the technology for making Torpedoes.

they are techinically torps, they work in the same way, you fire it, it moves along, it detonates....

I've never heard of a matter/antimatter star... probably because it would oblitterate itself...

If they could replicate the torpedoes, they'd still need antimatter. Normal replicators can't replicate antimatter. It's all a stupidity of the writers I think(again!).
