A three-year-old girl has died on a Cornwall beach after getting trapped in a five-foot hole in sand.
It is thought the girl was smothered with sand after digging the hole with her brother on Upton Towans Beach, near Hayle, on Sunday afternoon.
Portreath Coastguard Rescue, the fire brigade, police and a helicopter from RNAS Culdrose were sent to the scene.
The boy was unharmed, but the girl, believed to be from Sussex, was pronounced dead at hospital.
Tragic accident
She was pronounced dead at 1750 BST after being airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske, by helicopter, Devon and Cornwall Police said.
Police said there were no suspicious circumstances, and that the family had been on holiday.
The force said: "The boy was released quite quickly but the girl was trapped.
"Police are treating this as a tragic accident. The girl was with her family on holiday and are not local to the area."
Peter Trenchard, manager at the nearby Beachside Holiday Park, Hayle, said: "Our hearts go out to the family at this sad time."
Penwith area Beach Manager Phil Drew said: "Our lifeguards were alerted and went to the scene to assist. Members of the public also went to assist, but it became a bit chaotic with the number of people around.
"A lot of sand collapsed back into the hole, then the emergency services arrived and between us we dug for about half an hour and managed to get her out.
"Because of the position the child was in, it was difficult to get any equipment down to keep any resuscitation going for any length of time.
"A safety message to try and get out there is if you are going to dig in the sand, please think about what the consequences would be if the sand did collapse in on you."

Ok what I really want to know about this artical is what where the parents doing when there two children managed to dig a Five foot hole thats nearly as big as me.
I know its a very sad thing and my heart does go out to them but come on how could you not notice the fact yours kids are 5 foot beneath the sand.........
expecialy a 3 year old.
I would barly let samantha out of my sight at the beach at that age, and if she was digging a hole I d be sitting right beside her.

I agree with you Jonathan. I wonder where was the parents too. I know I would not take my eyes off of my kids. I will be right by them. It is sad.

That really is sad, and at just age three gosh she didn't get a real chance at life, thats whats so sad

Yeah, exactly. At the age of 3 they can be very stubborn and want to explore things for themselves, but that doesn't mean you don't have to keep an eye on them. They can't oversee situations like that. The brother is not to blame, he's young too.
I agree, I can't understand what the parents were doing. Sunbathing?

yer I know what you mean,
I dont blame the boy, I just think they most have been doing something other than really watching,
I know its hard to watch kids every second, blinks there goes samantha up the back street (clever bloody thing can now open the blummin gate and mr posty can you not read the close the gate please wild child behind gate)
but yer a 5 foot hole thats hudge by any standards, I am only 5 foot 10, and it would take me absolutly ages to dig a hole of that size with a gardening spade....
But I am sure that the parents will now become over pertective of the young boy.
the poor boy most be feeling really bad, I feel really sorry for him.
I hear and read things like this and it makes me want to grab that yukky thing called cotten buds and rap samantha in it.

I believe a parents or parents do have to keep an eye on their kids all the time cause that is what they make their mistakes at by not watching the kids.

Yeah exactly... That boy must feel horrible. And the parents! Omg, the guilt. 
Yeah.. Exactly.   Well, you can't protect your child from everything, but such things... you wouldn't wish anyone to go through...

Darwin awards are for those who kill themselves through stupidity, or at least become unable to reproduce, therefore meaning they remove their genes from the gene pool. the 3 year old wasn't stupid, so it's definitely not a candidate.
My heart goes out to the family. We don't know the full circumstances of the accident, but how such young children managed to dig such a deep hole makes me wonder. I hope someone will learn from this, so such a tragic accident doesn't occur again.
