Canada's international trade minister has called his U.S. counterpart to demand the Americans return the $5 billion in duties they've collected in the softwood lumber dispute.
Jim Peterson warned U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman that the future of the North America Free Trade Agreement is in peril if the United States doesn't respect a ruling handed down by a NAFTA panel on Wednesday.
The panel dismissed Washington's claims that Canada's softwood exports are subsidized and have damaged the U.S. lumber industry. Washington is largely ignoring the ruling.
At Friday's annual premiers' conference, B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell said he hopes Prime Minister Paul Martin gets involved in reminding the U.S. that both countries benefit from a healthy trading relationship.
"My message to the prime minister is to take this to the highest level and point this out," Campbell said.
"It's hard for us to see how you can build a long-term relationship in any kind of trade if the Americans aren't willing to live up to their obligations," the premier said.
The premiers and territorial leaders, while attending their three-day conference in Banff, Alta., met Thursday with U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins.
The ambassador, who has been on the job for just six weeks, said he would take the premiers' concerns back to Washington.
