PostTue Jul 19, 2005 12:04 am    Some new Serenity tidbits.....

Thought you all might appriciate a few new Serenity tidbits.

First, Issue #1 of the Serenity comic should be out soon if it isn't already. I don't have it yet, but I will. The four-page preview I saw online looked pretty sweet.

Second, two things appeared at Comic-Con:

1) A few clips from the Serenity soundtrack:

(note: limited bandwidth. You may need to wait a few hours.)

2) A film poster, although I don't think it's the official one:

One of the actors look ex-Joey on a soap opera One life to live. I definetly want to see it. Cause I like the actor.

I wouldn't know about that. Most of the actors are fairly unknown, but a few have some notable credits other than Firefly-----

Nathan Fillion was on Two Guys, A Girl, And a Pizza Place and Saving Private Ryan.
Alan Tudyk was in Dodgeball and I, Robot.
Ron Glass was in Barney Miller
Adam Baldwin was in Independence Day
Gina Torres was in Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions
Jewel Staite was in Space Cases

I don't know what Morena Baccarin or Sean Maher did before or since Firefly. Summer Glau is definintely new; prior to Firefly, all she'd done was an episode of Angel, and a few commercials. She's since guested on CSI.

I can't wait already.

Gina Torres appeared in a few episodes of 24 Season 3 as well.

I didn't know Fillion was in Saving Private Ryan - gonna have to rewatch that now!

I'm holding back on the comics for now - hoping they're gonna be republished in one volume. I don't much go in for comics - much prefer novels, so I can't wait for the Firefly / Serenity novels to be released.

I read a post by the author of the Serenity novelisation, Keith DeCandido over at http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com (the exact link is http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/index.html?fuseaction=forum.viewtopic&t=5434&start=330 but you'll need to be registered to see that I think) in which he confirmed this artwork will be the cover of the novelisation:

"[The] poster was unleashed at Comic-Con this weekend, and it will also be the artwork for the novelization cover.

The main difference between the poster and the book cover are that the words "FROM WRITER/DIRECTOR JOSS WHEDON" will be removed and replaced with the words "A NOVELIZATION BY KEITH R.A. DeCANDIDO, BASED ON THE SCREENPLAY BY JOSS WHEDON." "

Those soundtrack samples are great as well - does anyone know if a Serenity soundtrack CD will be released?

I quite like the poster and will definitely be getting one of my own if I can. If they don't go on sale, you may see me tearing one off the wall of the cinema and making a run for it

I haven't actually seen the movie, but apparently he's the "wrong" Private Ryan.

After Firefly was cancelled, Joss wanted to keep his principal actors employed while he worked to get the show revived; therefore, he made Nathan an evil preacher in Buffy's seventh season, and Gina some kind of evildoer in Angel's fourth.

Reaction to the poster has been rather mixed, but I like it, and so does Nathan, apparently.

An article about why you should watch Firefly on the Scifi channel this Friday:

What do you reckon to the trailer Lindley? Reckon it'll do enough to pull in the masses?

I surely hope so!

In any case, for all those people who are new to the so-called 'Verse - where have you been!?! Watch Firefly when it's on (I don't know which episodes are showing since I don't have access to the channel) but watch as much of it as you can and then, after a few episodes, tell me you don't love it. Go on. I dare you.

After the trailer first came out on the 'net, Firefly: The Complete Series climbed almost instantly back into the top 100 on Amazon's Top Sellers.

After the trailer started showing widely in theaters (with War of the Worlds, mostly, from what I've heard), it began a slow but steady ascent, eventually reaching #2 on the Amazon.com Top Sellers list for a day or so.

It's currently #24.

The trailer is doing something. Word of mouth has to do the rest.

Well since I've gone to university, pretty much everyone who I lived with has been 'exposed' to Firefly. They all say they'll go and see the film.

One guy, after learning of my love for Star Wars told me he hated sci-fi and couldn't understand the attraction of it. I leant him the Firefly boxset. Last time I spoke to him he was contemplating buying it for himself...

Personally I think people will like it, it's just getting them to go and see it - that'll be the main issue I reckon. Mind you, everytime I see mention of Firefly or Serenity in a magazine be it online or on-paper, it's always glowing with praise and expectation for the film when it's released.

The fact that Serenity was to be at the Edinburgh Film Festival made it on to the front page of Empire Online (www.empireonline.co.uk - the website for the popular film magazine, Empire) which, I think, is a huge thing for such a low-key film (relatively speaking).

Number one reason people will like the film: It's sci-fi without being sci-fi.

Usually, the main complaint people have about science fiction is that it's too weird and hi-tech. Firefly is basically a western set in space, with guns, fighting, and explosions. There aren't mountains of lines of technobabble like, "remodulate the deflector dish to send an anaphasic subspace pulse" and the characters are real and believable. That's why shows like BSG, Firefly, etc, can attract even the mainstream audience.
