Sorry, I should have been clearer in my post. I haven't seen it either. I wondered whether anyone here had. Oh well, it'll be on DVD soon - every other show seems to be.

Well that's just your opinion despite you presenting it as a fact. Which it ain't.
In my opinion, the special effects in Star Wars were amazing. There were also too many - look at the battle of Coruscant - you couldn't see hardly anything of what was going on in the background. Sure there were some damn fine visuals but you only saw the battle around Anakin and Obi-Wan. Nothing else. Compare this to Return of the Jedi and you had minor characters all involved in the skirmish (eg. Wedge Antilles) which, for me, made the battle seem all the more real than seeing (or trying to) the various ships going at each other in the background. Don't get me wrong, I loved Star Wars, but War of the Worlds just won out for me. I stress again that's for me. I shalln't make out that what I think goes for universal fact

With War of the Worlds, sure it only focused on a small group of people but I felt that the way that it was done, brought alot more emotion into it. As Starfleet Dentist says, there are some terrifying bits in there. Not because of the visuals but because of the composition of the film. The visualisations of the actual aliens were (in my opinion) by no means scary. For me, it was the 'horns' (klaxons?) of the alien machines. A simple noise like that conjures up more feelings of fear than any complex CGI work IMO.

I don't think you can compare WOTW and Star Wars, because WOTW simply is closer to the "normal people". That little bit of heroism with the grenades was just right and with the Bazookas taking down one of the tripods there was also enough "yay, we killed em, humans rule" in the ending.
I enjoyed it anyways.

That part with the grenade was cool. It actually showed the machine very well.

Yeah I know what you mean though why the army thought it necessary to waste ammo shooting at things that were already dying, I surely don't know.
That bit reminded me of the bit in The Empire Strikes Back where Luke throws the grenade inside the AT-AT...

Really? That low?
It seems to me that everyone either loves this film or hates. Everyone I've spoken to back home seems to feel that way though.
I think my esteem over it has been weakened after seeing some of Star Wars again though.
I'm now tempted to agree that, yeah, OK maybe Star Wars was better

The aliens died out, due to micro organisms living in water. Yes, after everything the military threw at them, it was micro organisms that killed them. It's been a long time since I read the novel or seen the original film, but I think the common cold killed them then.
I think it's an interesting ending. Look at it this way. Even in the real world, there are things that are fatal to, say, humans that are not fatal to animals. And vice versa. It was an interesting ending.

Wow, this movie totally sucked. The kids were soooooooooooooo annoying. And just when I thought we were rid of that son of his.... he lived! How stupid. "IS IT THEM, IS IT THEM?!" I mean, of course it is, sheesh. And everytime they wouldn't listen to him (Cruise), they'd end up getting hurt/scared, whatever. So you'd think they'd learn. Like when Fanning went off to go to the bathroom, and Cruise told her to stay in sight but she didn't and she saw all those dead people floating down the river... Sheesh, you'd think she'd have learned, 
But yeah, that dead people river scene was neat, along with the train.
Athens (the place where Cruise was when he took the ferry across the Hudson, or at least halfway across before it capsized) is totally about 30 minutes from my house. I had clams casino there once, How he managed to walk from Athens to Boston over night (thats about a 3 hour drive), is beyond me. How tacky.
However, the ending was better than that of Signs, thank god.

I thought the train scene was possibly one of the most chilling in the film. Having said that I'd forgotten about it until you mentioned it.
And as for the kids, yeah it was a bit predictable that the son would magically appear at the end (obviously he's fire/explosion-proof) but I still hold by my opinion that Fanning is one of the best child actors I've seen.

Wowz, people (as in critics) are comparing this movie to 9/11. I don't think that was it at all.
Someone I work with lives in Athens, and had all kinds of family that was in the movie in the crowd. Very neato.
