Yeah it might be a spin off but its still to early to say. Its apparently going to be completly different from the usual star trek. Apparently we arent going to leave the cinema with a smile on our faces. But then again dont forget the writer of the new movie also wrote "Band of Brothers" so im expecting something similar accept in the star trek universe.

That could be an interesting play on the franchise - following a squad of troops in some kind of conflict.

I don't think it would ultimately work out though. With series such as Band of Brothers or movies such as say, Saving Private Ryan the backdrop and locations (etc) are already established. The majority of people who see these things have some knowledge of what the situation is.

If such a scenario featured in a Star Trek film, you would have to explain the situation from scratch (war situations already established in Star Trek - such as the Dominion War - would not be readily accessible to a non-Trekky - ie. They would not understand what is going on) before establishing the cast.

Did that make sense?

Yeah i know what u mean. But i think this film will appeal more to non hardcore trek fans and people that just like star trek a little bit. I doubt they will subtly add in lots of canon information like the class of the starship or go on about something which is in another trek series or something like that
