PostTue Jul 05, 2005 7:49 pm    Astrologer Sues NASA Over Comet Probe

Quote:
MOSCOW (July 5) - NASA's mission that sent a space probe smashing into a comet raised more than cosmic dust - it also brought a lawsuit from a Russian astrologer.

Marina Bai has sued the U.S. space agency, claiming the Deep Impact probe that punched a crater into the comet Tempel 1 late Sunday "ruins the natural balance of forces in the universe," the newspaper Izvestia reported Tuesday. A Moscow court has postponed hearings on the case until late July, the paper said.

Scientists say the crash did not significantly alter the comet's orbit around the sun and said the experiment does not pose any danger to Earth.

The probe's comet crash sent up a cloud of debris that scientists hope to examine to learn how the solar system was formed.

Bai is seeking damages totaling $300 million - the approximate equivalent of the mission's cost - for her "moral sufferings," Izvestia said, citing her lawyer Alexander Molokhov. She earlier told the paper that the experiment would "deform her horoscope."

NASA representatives in Russia could not be reached for comment on the case.

Astrologers argue that harming a comet will upset the balance of the universe.

There are a few groups that thought the comet was made of antimatter and would explode.

What reason did NASA have for randomly blowing it up again?

One thing was they wanted to find out the "age of the universe". And they didn't really "blow it up."

To investigate the composition of comets. Far from random.

Wikipedia wrote:
The mission's Principal Investigator is Michael A'Hearn, an astronomer at the University of Maryland.

The Deep Impact mission will help answer fundamental questions about comets, such as:

* Is the composition of a cometary nucleus the same throughout, or has some physical process caused the interior to become differentiated from the surface? In other words, is the nucleus layered?
* Are cometary nuclei highly cohesive and tightly-packed, or porous conglomerates?
* Do any parts of a cometary nucleus contain pristine material that have been untouched since the creation of the comet during the Solar System's early history?

Scientists hope that these questions will be answered, at least in part, by data from the Deep Impact mission. For example, the size and shape of the crater produced by the impact will tell scientists how well-packed the cometary material is.

If she wins, I'm going to start a class action here in the US.

Suing somebody over something silly like this is stupid.

Let the scientist do what they have to do to know what is out there and the astrologers needs to leave the good scientist alone.

Comets are so beautiful, it was a shame to take a chunk out of it. BUT- now we will be able to know what comets are composed of... so I suppose that will help us "unlock more secrets of the universe".

I think it's a fantastic story. Goes to show how ridiculous claims can be. It's certainly a novel concept for a claim regardless of the outcome.

I did once hear about a guy who broke into someone's house with the intent to steal, but somehow got locked in their garage and he sued them because he had to eat dog food for a week. That was just plain stupid.

People seem to be allowed to sue anything that moves these days.

How is this person suffering from the fact that the 'balance of the universe' is altered. Thats not... sane.

Well if you think about it, the balance of the universe has already been altered by man long ago...
