PostThu Jun 30, 2005 12:59 pm    Upcoming Wrestling Events (July)

Here's what's coming up in July. If you have any comments/predictions you wish to make, please do so in this topic, and please specify which event you're referring to.

FWA Vendetta (July 10th)

Taking place at Broxbourne Civic Hall on Sunday 10th July, FWA Vendetta will see what should be some cracking matches, including a 10 Man Battle Royal, to determine the contendor to FWA British Heavyweight Titleholder, Alex Shane. This should be British wrestling at it's best.

TNA No Surrender (July 17th, PPV)

I'm looking forward to this one. In an NWA Heavyweight Title match, The Monster Abyss will defend against Raven. With those two involved, you're guaranteed a good match. Only other match announced at this time is Chris Sabin VS Samoa Joe. Check out the official website for updates.

WWE The Great American Bash (July 24th, PPV)

Smackdown presents this card on July 24th in Buffalo, New York. No matches have been announced as of this writing - what matches take place will all depend on how the Draft Lottery goes. The deadline for General Managers to make trades is midnight tonight, btw. I can't wait.

I try not to make a habit of being the first reply to my own topic. I apologize in advance to the mods if that's against the rules. I was just hoping to get some opinions from the few wrestling fans that are here. This is the ONLY time I'll be the first reply to my own topic.

As of now, three matches have been announced for The Great American Bash.

Chris Benoit will challenge Orlando Jordan for the United States Title. It's a bit of a comedown for Benoit to be challenging for the United States Title, after being World Heavyweight Champion last year. Still, it should be a very good, pure match.

The Undertaker will take on Muhammad Hassan. I am sure The Undertaker will be victorious.

World Heavyweight Champion Batista will defend against JBL. I've been craving this match since January 2005, when JBL dissed Batista after the "Royal Rumble". They couldn't fight at first, being on two different shows, but now they can. And I hope Batista gets the victory, although a small part of me feels JBL will get lucky and take the title. We shall see.

Abyss defending? He's the NWA champion? Last time I saw him he was basically Goldylocks' bitch.

Chris Benoit vs. Orlando Jordan for the U.S. Championship- I agree that it is a bit of a comedown for Chris, but I am also sure that if Chris wins it will be almost as good as winning the World Heavyweight Championship. Benoit is one of the true Americans on SmackDown! and would thoroughly respect the U.S. Championship...and without the Basham Brothers, it may just happen .

The Undertaker vs. Muhammad Hassan for Number One Contendership to the World Heavyweight Championship- I agree that Muhammad Hassan deserves the beating of his life and that Undertaker may be victorious, but after what happened on the July 7th, 2005 episode of SmackDown! I have this unforgiving feeling in my gut that Hassan may start a new streak on SmackDown!...plus we can't forget the Orton factor, he's still bitter that he didn't end Taker's undefeated Wrestlemania streak.

Batista vs. JBL for the World Heavyweight Championship- I too have been waiting for this ever since JBL bad mouthed Batista earlier this year, but as Dentist, I too have this sickening feeling in my gut that Orlando Jordan will interfere costing Batista the World Heavyweight Championship. However, if Batista can outlast Triple H and Ric Flair's onslaught...than perhaps he can last JBL and Orlando Jordan's...unless Vince McMahon and the WWE writers have anything to say about it, which I hope they don't . Plain and simple...I say, GO BATISTA!!!!!

Having had more time to think about Chris Benoit, I think I'd like to see him as United States Champion. Okay, it's not the same as being World or WWE Champion, but the U.S. Championship is a prestigious title, with a lot of history and some of the greatest matches of all time have been U.S. Title matches.

Yes, I have a feeling Orton may be a factor in the Undertaker/Hassan match. I'd bet money on it.

I like the way WWE has been building Batista as an unstoppable force, in the same way they did with Ultimate Warrior in the late 80s/early 90s. When Batista loses the belt, it'll be because of outside interference. I do want to see Batista pin JBL but if one were able to bet money on wrestling, I'd say that JBL will find a way to win.

As of now, The Great American Bash is shaping up to be an awesome PPV. I can't wait to see what matches they will add.

Agreed.

The United States Championship may not garner the same prestige the WWE or World Heavyweight Championships do, but it will always garner that much, maybe more, respect than those two championships combined. to tell you the truth, when Teddy Long, Paul Heyman, Kurt Angle, or Stephanie McMahon (i forget which) brought back the United States Championship...I was estatic, I looked forward to more great matches.

For the World Title match, I also feel that JBL will pull out another trick from his black book of tricks...but who knows, maybe Batista can pull some tricks of his own .

I always judge a title by it's history, who held the title, what type of matches were fought over it, and all that. Some belts in wrestling have been worthless. The United States Title is not one of them.

I don't know how long you've watched wrestling, Captain Skenadore, but there have been some cracking U.S. Title matches. In late 1991, Rick Rude took the title from Sting in a cracking match. Dustin Rhodes took the title from Ricky Steamboat in a fantastic match, circa early 1993. Going futher back, great wrestlers like Magnum T.A. and Tully Blanchard wore the U.S. Title.

I really wish WWE Home Video would release a U.S. Title Compilation DVD, as there are so many great matches they could release.

Indeed a DVD would be nice and granted I have been only watching wrestling since the mid-late 90s and even than it was only WWE...no WCW or ECW; however, I did know much about the history of those businesses and certain titles as I looked them up online. Indeed the U.S. Championship has had some great matches, providing more history for it and all that...and as far as it goes for saying some titles were a joke, I would tend to agree with that, even some of the old WWE (F at that time) titles were worthless.

Also, you have titles that became a joke, even though they weren't originally. For example, the WCW TV Title was once a prestigious title, with guys like Stunning Steve Austin bringing prestige to the belt, but in WCW's disastrous final years, the title was worthless.
