PostFri Jul 08, 2005 10:42 am    ID cards - why not?

I believe that we should create a worldwide ID card system using two or more biometric standards to validate the holder. I am not saying that they should replace any other paperwork or systems, just that they be used to verify identity.

One day (probably in just few years, it's only a matter of time), authorities will be able to check your DNA directly, so why wait. Let's get used to being ourselves.

No ID cards. They won't stop suicide bombers, they will irritate innocent folk and they will cost a lot of money.

More retinas and fingerprints should be on file, though.

one worldwide ID would be nice. There would be less problems wth visitors from other places and their ID not being "valid" because it isn't from there.

They should have retina scanners instead of atm cards. It would help stop identity theft.

when i was in orlando, Florida in MGM Studios at the "Men in Black" ride, they had these lockers you could keep your stuff in while you went on the ride. Well, it scanned your finger print twice, and that was your key to open the locker back up. Wrong, finger print - it wouldn't open. It was super cool!

^we have that here at the tanning salon. A thumbprint in order to access your account. Becuase people come in and try to use other peoples sessions. Plus other employees can't "hook" their friends up. Well, only my friends can get hooked up cause I'm the boss! hehe.

Retina scanners were defeated way back in 1968. The US military gave up on them before 1970.

Iris scanners look promising.

I would like a universial ID card other than what we all have. If we could replace everything, Drivers Licenses etc. in a few years, It would make it a lot eaiser to card people when they try to purchase tobacco products at stores. I could see how some people would be worried about the price and all of the trouble to get them made, and it would only be a short amount of time before they end up being able to be faked by con artists. If there was a way to imprint your finger tip onto your ID Card, then have everyplace check your card to your hand, It might be able to be harder to fake. The new 20 dollar bills compared to the old 20s would be an example on how they should spice it up so that it would be harder to produce fakes.

^Yup.. that is true!

That is why I'd go with the thumbprint! I use my thumbprint to as my signature for my creditcard transactions. Well, only at the grocery store! hehe.

An iris scan is one of the most currently used methods of biometric authentication. Using a small camera, an iris scan system examines both irides of the individual's eyes. It then takes advantage of small details in the iris stromal pattern in order to attempt positive identification of an individual. Anthropologists have long established up to a few hundred items in the inherited feature space of the iris stroma and epithelia. The irides of identical twins are measurably different; There are differences between the left and the right eye.

Expensive, would probably double the costs.

Oooo how informative of you!! I figured it was for your eye, but I wasn't sure exactly what it did. Thanks, Stellar!

And yes, it would be EXTREEMLY pricey! Oh well, maybe all the money the government collects can finally be put to some good use and invest in something that can actually help the country.

It will probably come to all this in the future. Don't you think?

But now we must think of the witness protection program, they can give you a new identification, but they can't give you a new iris or retina....

I don't believe they should be implamented, because of the cost and the control governments could have but they will be used in some countries soon (ie everyday).
