LONDON, England (CNN) -- Near simultaneous explosions rocked the London Underground network and three buses at the morning rush hour, police said, causing injuries and prompting officials to shut down the entire underground transport network.
Some media reports said there were fatalities.
The explosions came a day after London was awarded the 2012 Olympics and as the G8 summit was getting underway in Scotland. Initial reports blamed a power surge, but officials were not ruling out a terrorist attack.
"There have been a number of dreadful incidents across London today," said Home Secreatary Charles Clarke, Britain's top law enforcement officer. He said there were "terrible injuries."
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair urged Londoners not to panic and said it was too early to say what caused the blasts.
The Tube blasts at the height of the rush hour on Thursday were initially blamed on a power surge.
But amid the chaos eyewitnesses reported that a packed double decker bus in the Russell Square area had been severely damaged in a blast.
A second bus was reported to have been damaged in Tavistock Square.
Describing the Russell Square blast, eyewitness Belinda Seabrook told the UK Press Association she saw an explosion rip through the bus as it approached the Square.
"I was on the bus in front and heard an incredible bang, I turned round and half the double decker bus was in the air," she said.
She said the bus was travelling from Euston to Russell Square and had been "packed" with people turned away from Tube stops.
Travellers emerged from underground tunnels covered in blood and soot. Scotland Yard declared the emergency a "major incident."
Emergency services were called to London's Liverpool Street Station after reports of an explosion shortly before 9 a.m.
A short while later, London Underground said there had been "another incident at Edgware Road" station in north west London.

1 bus, 5 tube stations according to the police. The whole of London is at a standstill... and to think I was meant to be going there today.
There are fatalities, and the emergency procedures have been put in place. I just hope that not too many people have been hurt.

I ve just heard about this, since I use the pc upstaiurs non of my tv's ever see the news when samantha is awak I actualy had a phone call from a customer of mine from the hosting asking me if I was ok considering they are on the oposit side of the world.
Bloody hell was my first thoughts then outrage,
it is prity clear why they have chosen now to do it who ever did it, with the prim minister being away and the fact of the olympics,
this truly shows how sick and nasty people of the world can be to do such atrsosities.

All the carriages were absolutely packed. Everyone crouched down as well as they could on the floor.
A couple of men started trying to open the train doors a little but some people were unsure as to whether the smoke was from the carriage or was coming from outside. They managed to get the doors open about five or 10 inches. Slowly the smoke started to filter out.
But then it sounded like another train had come up behind us and the carriage filled with smoke again and people became really, really frightened.
People were crying and then people started talking and shouting between the carriages. They kept saying there were people leaving the carriage behind us. They were saying they had broken a window and they started smashing a window in our carriages
We were there about 20 minutes before engineers freed us. There were absolutely no announcements during this time.
We were led out down another tunnel back to the station, which was then evacuated.
It was very scary while we were stuck on the train. Very silent and we were thinking we were not going to get out. People thought they were just going to suffocate.

There have been three confirmed explosions - one on a bus at Tavistock Square, central London, and two at Aldgate East and Edgware Road Tube stations.
Mainline London to Scotland train company GNER said it did not expect its East Coast Main Line services to run as far as London at any time on Thursday.
Commuter Gerard Bithell's train was diverted from Moorgate to King's Cross and said travellers were told there had been a crash involving Tube trains.
"The area is solid with people and I have seen many commuters with blackened faces just walking around looking stunned," said Mr Bithell.
Pavements are packed solid with commuters who are trying to get onto packed buses.
BBC News reporter Nicola McGann said there was not a sense of panic or urgency at Marylebone Station in central London, which has shut - people were just trying to go about their business.
Mainline services effected are those into Liverpool Street, serving eastern England, Kings Cross where the East Coast Mainline terminates, Euston the southern end of the West Coast Main Line, and St Pancras, used by Midland Mainline services.

"Everyone is already a bit worried today about the high oil price, there's a bit of uncertainty, the G8 is on today, so there's a bit of profit taking."
The shockwaves were felt as far away as South Africa, where shares dropped more than 1.8%.
"This is all on the back on the London underground incidents, and particularly the bus blast," said one Johannesburg trader.
"The market is getting pretty panicked. It's the uncertainty that is worrying everyone." |

JIM MILLINGTON, TAVISTOCK SQUARE
There's a bus, formerly a double-decker bus outside the BMA building and clearly destroyed by a bomb. And there are at least one or two fatalities laid out on the pavement.
It must have been on the bus because the top deck is destroyed and what's below is not destroyed. It was a bomb on the top deck of a bus.

I was on the bus in front and heard an incredible bang, I turned round and half the double decker bus was in the air.
It was a massive explosion and there were papers and half a bus flying through the air, I think it was the number 205.
There must be a lot of people dead as all the buses were packed, they had been turning people away from the tube stops.
We were about 20 metres away, that was all.

I just cycled in from Lewisham to Liverpool St and the amount of people out on the streets now is incredible.
It looks serious as all the emergency services and people around the roadblocks north of the river were very serious indeed.

It was a train on the Piccadilly line between King's Cross and Russell Square and literally it was just a very loud bang. The train derailed.
There was smoke everywhere. There was no fire but the smoke was quite oppressive.
There were a lot of serious injuries down there as well. A lot of serious head injuries.
A guy by me thought he was going to die, I'm hoping he got out ok.

There was a loud bang in the tunnel and the train just stopped and all of a sudden it was filled with black, gassy smoke and we couldn't breathe and it was stinging our eyes and the lights went out and it just took a while for people to get to us and it was very scary.
I thought we weren't going to get out because we couldn't get off the train.

There was a loud bang and the train ground to a halt. People started panicking, screaming and crying as smoke came into the carriage.
A man told everyone to be calm and we were led to safety along the track.
Everyone was terrified when it happened.
When they led us to safety, I went past the carriage where I think the explosion was. It was the second one from the front.
The metal was all blown outwards and there were people inside being helped by paramedics.
One guy was being tended outside on the track. His clothes were torn off and he seemed pretty badly burned.
LISA CURTIS, NEAR LIVERPOOL STREET
People were evacuated immediately. I overheard one lady saying to a police officer that it looked like someone had left what looked like a brown jumper on the platform and it exploded.
Smoke filled the platform and people were evacuated.
London is havoc now.
UNNAMED WITNESS, TAVISTOCK PLACE
I was walking along. There was a whole crowd of people around the bus.
The next thing I knew I was on the floor. There was shedloads of glass raining down.
Someone fell on me and someone fell on him. For a moment I thought I was going to be trampled.
I picked myself up and everyone was running. There was glass everywhere.
We ran into a building and a security guard was saying `get in, get in'. Then the security guard said `get out' which was a bit scary.
I saw the bus ripped out at the back ... it couldn't have been anything else [but a terrorist attack].
LOYITA WORLEY, LIVERPOOL STREET
"All the lights went out and the train came to an immediate halt.
There was smoke everywhere and everyone was coughing and choking, but remained calm. We couldn't open the doors."
She was in a carriage next to one where an explosion happened.
She said the adjacent carriage was "black on the inside". She saw people who appeared to have their clothes blown off, and bodies lying inside the carriage. |

they have been they think acualy 7 blasts.
Did you see Tony Blair, how upset and anoyed he is, it looked as if he was about to burst out and cry.
We are very lucky in the way that we have such good plan in place to deal with this,
the emergancy services are doing a very great job, and managing this disaster very well, the speed and way they have delt with this is amazing.

Yes. It hasn't been confirmed yet though.
6 explosions at Kings Cross, Liverpool Street, Aldgate Street, Moorgate, Russell Square, Edgware Road tube stations, and on a bus at Tavistock Square.
There is currently a rescue operation at Kings Cross, as there are people trapped underground.

Yes... two have been confirmed, yet there are areas yet to be evacuated.
The bus that exploded in Tavistock Square.
I spelt Al Qaeda wrong in my previous posts- I'll edit them in a minute.
The House of Commons has been suspended.
