"Data" was neither gay nor straight. He was a machine. Machine's might be programmed to make choices, but being gay or straight is something you determine on feelings for one sex or the other. Without feelings how could he make that choice?

Yeah, at least until he got that chip. And even then, he could take it out. That "dating" thing was just an experiment, one that failed, btw.

Data might have had an emotion chip, but I don't think that would be enough. He never had that gut instinct.

The prospect of androids being gay is a matter that is discussed thoroughly throughout the internet, so why not in this topic?

Don't you think that if such a machine would develop sexual interests, that it would be homosexual? In animals and humans without gonads, behaviour is strongly affected. I would like to postulate that a man who is not exposed to testosterone has a tendency to become gay. Actually, this is interesting since there are some chromosomal disorders in which the gonads are rudimentary. I suppose there are studies which have assessed the sexual interest of those people.....

But I agree with the majority of the people in this topic, I don't think data is gay. I just merely wanted to bring up the subject.

Honestly, I don't think that anything could make a machine have actual feelings.

Is it? Is it taboo to have sex with holocharacters? I hear the fact that they aren't flesh-and-blood never stops Chakotay... (As he himself tells Janeway when she falls in love with the Irish guy.) And anyway, Data is the only android of the sentient and life-like type, so I think it would be harsh to introduce a whole general taboo only on his account.

In other words, sex with living beings is a metaphor for men-women relationships, heterosexuality, while sex with androids is akin to gay relationships, which society frowns on.

Sorry, B definitely does not follow from A here. Tasha was head of security. If people learned of this behavior it might simply undermine her authority. Or, given her somewhat stiff personality, she might simply have found it embarrassing. I'm sure Piccard would have reacted the same way. (Especially if he had put on a see-thru dress and seduced Data, but even if it had just been Beverly.) Gay themes? No evidence.

As for the actual question of Data's preferences, I'm sure he's advanced enough to choose, dependeing on circumstances and what's most benefitial. You can probably call him BI-sexual (as in binary).

Data? Gay? No.

I mean, Tasha Yar? Seriously, she wasn't a guy.
That other lady whom he kissed wasn't a guy.

Of course, I suppose that doesn't make him not gay. That just proves he never got down with another guy. (Or did he? Hmmmm...)
