What a crock. How about Dale Earnhardt, he may not be #1, but against Muhammed Ali, Tiger Woods, or Brett Favre, he should be there.
I'd say Ronald Reagan deserves #1. He did it all.

Ok. You know Brett Favre is up there because of
A) The Wisconsinites (Yes. I said it. Wisconsinites), and
B) Everyone in his hometown.

Brett Favre is a fantastic QB in all right, one of the best ever. But if you're going to have him on there, I think Dale Earnhardt would be a much more viable choice.

Heh, Alexander Graham Bell has now been on the list for "Greatest Briton," "Greatest Canadian," and "Greatest American." He sure does get around.
Out of the finalists, I'd say Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. should be the Greatest American, he did some pretty amazing things. However, all of them deserve to be on that list, so they all deserve to win.

Lizzie Borden
Benedict Arnold
Lee Harvey Oswald... ... I thought up Lizzie Borden. My brother told me to put the other two.
Nah, really, my real votes goes to Neil Armstrong because he went to the moon, Walt Disney because he brought happiness to many people, Bill Gates because he screwed the world with Microsoft, Malcolm X, Christopher Reeve (superman!), Elvis Presley because he's the king and Steven Spielberg for all the entertainment he's brought me.
*cough splutter general chocking* he died in America, he wasn't American!

He gets my vote, for inventing the telephone

Someone else mentioned this last night. I emailed the Discovery Channel, since it's their program, and amazingly enough, got a response earlier this morning. Everyone on the list has American citizenship.

I'd vote for Hulk Hogan.
Just kidding.
Most of the people on the list are deserving. It's a pity that you couldn't vote in different categories because you have Americans who achieved something in, say, science but that doesn't mean they're any less great than an American who achieved something in, say, literature or politics.
Martin Luther King Jr. definitely achieved a lot in his fight for equality. A lot of his actions paved the way for equality in the United States. The world would have been a lot different if he had not lived.

How about Nickola Tesla?
[sarcasm]
He only invented AC power, RF remote control, and the bladeless turbine.

Uhm... I choose FDR.
