Fri Jun 17, 2005 6:43 am Anyone here drive a 4x4 |
|
I don't drive because I've never been interested in learning to. However, recently, in the tabloids over here, there has been a lot of criticism of four-wheel-drive cars. Is it justified, do you think? Anyone here drive a 4x4, who wants to offer an opinion?
I'm not going to get into the pollution debate for now because our 'leaders' talk about pollution and global warming to take the spotlight off their own shortcomings. Of course, if anyone here wants to bring pollution into the debate, please do.
So if you love or hate 4x4s, please post your thoughts here. I hope cars don't have feelings because they've been ripped apart in the media in recent times.

One journalist in particular was ruthless about drivers of 4x4 cars - he made it real personal and any 4x4 driver who would have read his column may well have interpreted it as an act of war.
Pollution issues aside, I think people should drive what they want, provided it's not a danger to anyone and provided they don't speed.

HATE 4x4s. They are so dangerous and bad for the environment. Because of the shape of the front, they are more likely to kill if you get hit by one. They also take up too much space on the road and make me feel unsafe because they are so big and dangerous.

My brother drives a mitsubishi galant vr4 which is all wheel drive and all wheel steer does that count? . I also drive a ford tx5 turbo which is probally just as bad environment wise as a off road 4x4.
What makes 4x4's really bad for the environment. There are many worse vehicles like older large engine sports and super cars etc.
I should also mention all wheel drive cars such as subaru are much safer in the wet too. Not quite sure about four wheel drive off road type cars don't know anything about them.

Nothing wrong with Four Wheel Drive. They're not unsafe, unsafe is a tiny tin and plastic compact car that rips in half upon impact.
Wearing a seatbelt, i'll take a bigger vehicle any day.

Where I live, a 4x4 is a matter of necessity.

I drove to Reno a while back with my (then boyfriend) and I took the tacoma- pre runner. Which isn't 4x4. Well while driving there ended up being a HUGE snow storm and we eventually slid off the road and down a small hill. Anyway, we had to be pulled out. I really wish I had taken my Jeep then.
4x4's are very useful, regardless if they are more harmful to the environment...they can really get you out of danger. And fun too!!!

Good point. But if you're driving through the Northern United States, and you happen to hit Bigfoot, I think you've got a better chance of surviving, don't you?
I'll say one thing - not being a driver, I'm not too into cars. But I do think some 4x4s look great.

Theresa, I personally love that truck, But why don't ya put some rims on it. Dress it up a bit?
My Aunt has one, with captian seats.
I love them so much, but they are too big for me. I like smaller cars/trucks I guess.
Well, I do own small ones lol!

I don't mind people who live out in the country having them, but what is the point if you live in a city?
And they are not safer. Many smaller hatchbacks get higher ENCAP safety ratings than the 4x4s. Most 4x4s only get 2 out of 5 stars for safety.
The whole big car=safe car is a pschological thing for people who feel unsafe.
And they are not good for the environment as they don't get as many miles to the gallon as other cars do, meaning that they need more oil etc etc.
Quote: | Ground level pollution from 4x4s is just as damaging as carbon emissions. 4x4s can emit twice as much carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen dioxide as passenger cars. |
Okay, I admit, my source for that quote was biast (http://www.stopurban4x4s.org.uk/index.htm), but some of that is true because I read very similar facts in New Scientist magazine. It very ironic, New Scientist is always going on about climate change and pollution, yet most of the adverts in the magazine are for gas guzzlers.
Oh, and BTW, I do not agree with everything that http://www.stopurban4x4s.org.uk/index.htm has to say. In a way, yes, driving a 4x4 is as bad as drink driving (for the environment, at least), but seeing as drink drivers are just plain evil and should be crucified, I don't think that driving a 4x4 should be in the same league as drink driving.

I really don't see the attraction of a 4x4. If a guy came up to me in a 4x4, I would not find him attractive because of his car unless his job required that car (such as a ranger or a farmer). I'd much rather have a guy in a lambourgini or a smart car or mini or beetle. Small cars are cute and kooky. Big cars are for guys who are insecure about their masculinity.
