LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - A 4-year-old boy died after passing out aboard Walt Disney Worlds Mission: Space, a ride so intense that it has motion sickness bags and several riders have been treated for chest pain.
Daudi Bamuwamye died Monday afternoon on the attraction, which simulates a rocket launch and trip to Mars.
The Orange County Sheriffs office said the boy met the minimum 44-inch height requirement for the ride at the Epcot theme park, which uses centrifugal force to simulate twice the normal force of gravity.
An autopsy was expected later Tuesday to determine the cause of the boys death.
Boy was rigid, then limp
Officials said the boy, from Sellersville, Pa., was on the ride with his mother, Agnes, and a sister.
During the ride, the mother noticed that Daudis body was rigid and his legs were stretched straight out. She told detectives that she thought he was frightened so she took his hand.
When the ride ended, the victim was limp and unresponsive in his seat, according to a sheriffs office report.
Paramedics tried to revive him, but he died at Celebration Hospital.
The $100 million ride, one of Disney Worlds most popular, was closed after the death but was reopened Tuesday after company engineers concluded that it was operating normally.
Motion sickness bags
In 2003, Disney began placing motion sickness bags in the ride.
During an eight-month period in 2003-04, six people over age 55 were taken to hospitals for treatment of chest pain and nausea after riding Mission: Space, though none of them was found to have any serious problem.
At that time, it was the most hospital visits for a single ride since Floridas major theme parks agreed in 2001 to report such problems to the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Updated figures were not immediately available.
One other death was reported at Disney World this year. A 77-year-old woman who was in poor health from diabetes and several ministrokes died in February after going on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at the Magic Kingdom. A medical examiners report said her death was not unexpected.
Warning signs
Signs warn visitors about the intensity of the Mission: Space ride.
For safety you should be in good health, and free from high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems, motion sickness or other conditions that can be aggravated by this adventure, one sign on view last year said. Signs also warn pregnant women not to go on the ride.
Floridas major parks are not directly regulated by the Department of Agriculture; state law exempts large, permanent amusement parks that have their own inspectors from state oversight. But the parks agreed to share safety information in 2001.
Disney officials said in a statement after the boys death that they were providing support to the family and are doing everything we can to help them during this difficult time.

I did the ride and I LOVED it! It was so damn real--and that's the point. I think that it was very STUPID of these parents to take a FOUR YEAR OLD on this ride. It's NOT something that a 4-year-old should go on. This is very sad, especially because the kid died doing something at DISNEY WORLD
Saddening story, but the parents should have been smarter. You don't take a FOUR YEAR OLD on a ride like this!!

It's a VERY intense ride. Great simulation--makes you feel EXACTLY like you're flying through space

silly? it isn't silly, it's sad. I think that they should put an age restriction on it. probably for people 10 or above.

Its no fault of the parents, they couldn't have known, and the kid did meet the minimum requirments. I've been on the ride, its awesome, and I took my little brother on it with me, he's FINE.

Sad that happened but obviously the parents fault. Not that they really could have seen it coming, but age restrictions are there for a reason appereantly

Every ride should have an age and height standards. Yes, in my opinion it is the parents fault. I definetly do not put my kids on something like that. I make sure it is safe.

/\ It makes lots of difference. The bone structure of children is different to that of adults (which is why they bounce when they get hit by cars).
I wouldn't take a four year old on. Just think of the G forces involved with going into space.
The kid's parents were somewhat ignorant

Actually, it IS the fault of the parents. They should have known better, asked about it, and everything. Just because a kid meets the minimum requirements doesn't mean that the parents should let them on.
It was the parents' fault, and they were STUPID.

They do tests to see if its safe. And had the parents asked, they would have said if they meet the requirments they're okay.

TSS TSS , any good parent would know not to put their kid on that ride. Just because it may have met the requirements does not mean it is safe..

So you're telling me that my parents aren't good parents because they let my little brother ride that with me? How judgmental. You can't judge people based on that.

I wasn't talking about you and was not judging. Just an opinion like everybody else. I know I wouldn't let my kids ride .

Parents tend to pick and choose their battles. And most parents would be more concerned about what they do when they're not around and doing things to prevent their kids from going off and doing drugs (and don't try to tell me young kids don't go off and drink and smoke and do drugs) than their kids going on a theme park ride.

Well, I've never been a fan of thrill rides, and I went on this one, making my dad and brother and I wait in line for around two hours because I had never gone on this ride and had heard of how intense it was. Any good parent would check on it the best that they could to make sure that the ride was SAFE for their kids. They should not just think merely about drugs and whatnot--but about safety for what they let their kids do. Now, I'm not saying that your parents are bad parents, but I'm just saying that a truly good parent would see if it is REALLY all right for a 4--or even 5--year old to go on this ride. I almost didn't, but I'm glad I did. This kid's parents, however, are not.

Even if they asked, they'd probably say "do they meet the requirments?" if the answer is "yes" they'd say "its safe"

It's not the parents fault as such, because they were told it was safe from the requirements. I personally wouldn't put a 4 year old child on it, but from what they knew it was safe.
((And 2g's isn't what it would really be like, it'd be more like 9+g's at some times))

You don't just ask that. Say, "Are you ABSOLUTELY sure that it's safe for a 4 year old kid?" or go on it BEFORE the child. I just think that what the parents did was absurd, allowing a 4 year old to do that. How old is your brother, may I ask, for comparison to this kid?

I don't think its bad to put a four year old on a ride. This was obviously a sad freak accident; it could've been anyone, anywhere.
A kid at my school had some kind of ceazure watching the movie "Of Mice and Men" his heart stopped and they were luckily able to recessitate him. I don't blame "Of Mice and Men" for what happened, it was just a sad occurance, these kinds of this just simply happen.

"On A ride." We're talking about ON THIS RIDE. It was not good for them to do.
