I've read it and liked it and the sequel, The Red King.

Titan, Book one is one of the best Star Trek novels written. The only problem, IMO, is a somewhat new concept to Star Trek. Throughout the book, you read that there are a few homosexual people exploring relationships. While I have nothing against gay people, honestly, I didn't feel that it was appropriate to put a controversial change into a well-established franchise. My little sister reads Star Trek books, and I don't want her to read this one b/c of that fact. I think this would be the case with many other people. There's no reason to write, implying a controversial subject to be ok. To repeat what I said above though...it was an outstanding book, and I reccommend it to everyone (old enough to not be ignorantly swayed by a book).

You do realise that one of the purposes of Star Trek is to be able to challenge peoples beliefs. Like Uhura in the original series- the thought that a black woman would have an important job on a starship was shocking at the time, but we've come a long way on from there.
Sci fi is the perfect area to challenge what is considered normal, as it doesn't cause people to slam it as much as if it was set here and now.
