A Toronto-based company has initial regulatory approval to create a red-light district on the web, but critics said it wouldn't necessarily stop *beep* from popping up in random surfing.
The concept is voluntary only, allowing *beep* sites to use a triple X designation in their names, said applicant ICM Registry.
ICM president and chairman Stuart Lawley said *beep* site operators would be "making an identifiable commitment to responsible behaviour."
More than 10 per cent of Internet traffic visits some of the estimated million-plus *beep* sites on the web, according to ICM.
An international body that regulates domain names said it approved the application because it was a private sector approach, not government. The U.S. Congress, for instance, has pushed for years for tighter controls on Internet *beep*.
"As a technical coordinator, we don't pass judgment over content on the Internet," said Kieran Baker, spokesman for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers based in Marina Del Rey, Calif.
Final approval of the ICM plan is expected within six to nine months, ICANN said.
Addresses would resemble plaything.xxx instead of plaything.com, which ICM says would improve the ability of child viewing filters to keep a lid on sexually explicit material, for example.
However, critics disagreed, noting *beep* site operators could still keep their .com designations.
"I don't think it's going to do anything to protect kids," said Donna Hughes, president of Enough is Enough, an Internet watchdog group. "It's not going to make filters work any better."
Others offered qualified support: "It isn't a complete solution, but it is a very important step in the right direction," said Parry Aftab, executive director of Wired Kids, a charity focused on child safety.
In a similar move, ICANN in April approved other new domain designations for employment sites � .jobs � and for the travel industry � .travel.

The guys "in charge" of the Internet should have made ALL *bleep* sites use a ".xxx", LIKE IT OR NOT. Also, no one should be allowed to advertise or sell on ".info". I hate that when I'm looking for info all I find is ads!

I never get adult spam, mostly cause I don't visit those kind of smutty sites. Last time I had any spyware in a Spybot check, was God knows how long ago.

They need to find a way of blocking under 18s. All that comes up is a little box saying "This is an adult site, you must be over 18 to enter" OOHH! Scary!!! That's really going to stop a fifteen horny hurricane from acessing it! 
And don't say "Just turn on AOL parental controls". They are a complete nightmare. I used to have parental controls on my account. Totally messed up, it wouldn't let me go on history websites I needed for homework or any toon sites so my parents got rid of it to stop my constant complaining.

That's true. You won't get any *beep* pop ups unless you're on a *beep* or erotica website. I'm a teenager. I know.

I have to agree about the AOL parental controls, they block almost everything under the sun. I think my little brother got banned from a chat room for telling someone to be quiet,

I don't visit them either (and didn't you pick up on my opposition to them?).

I HAVE a pop-up blocker. It does not mean that pop-ups have ceased to exist.

Actually that is automated. As most mail providers have privacy regulations where it comes to selling personal information to third parties. And by saying that there's pop up blockers it means that there's way to stop this horrible process!
