Since all the controversy on the Koran, apparently some guidelines needed to be in place for the handling of a detainee's little book...it's 3-pages long, containing little suggestions like "Hold the book with two hands, symbolizing respect and reverence."

Ridiculous, we thinks? If the Koran is so special, why isn't the bible treated with this sort of care, as well? Curious.

Heard about this at the Republican Breakfast I went to this morning. Yes, agreed. They ban the Bible in Saudi Arabia and burn it in other places, and yet when there are allegations of Koran abuse, EVERYONE goes up in arms! Such a hypocritical thing! And not only that, but we have rules that Gitmo and other prison workers need to wear gloves, etc. in the Koran, and yet are accused of abuse, etc of it and the people? Far from it! They are treated TOO WELL at Gitmo, it looks to me!

It's just another book to me like the bible is. It's written by people from the past, not sure if its full of truths or lies. I say handle it how you want. I'm not going to have problems sleeping thinking. "Oh no I held it with one hand."

The Qur'an is not the equivalent of the Bible, it is not the "Islamic Bible." In some senses, it is similar to the Bible in that it is a holy book, but the Koran is way more than the Bible.

The Bible is actually a collaborative effort by many people and has been compiled and recompiled several times throughout the last two millennia, translated and retranslated, to the point that numerous inaccuracies have emerged. This is the key difference between the Bible and the Qur'an--it is the literal word of God as through the prophet Muhammad. It's a tradition of a faith.

Western materialist culture has become less concerned with the actual item, and more concerned with the concept. Many of us have no problem with one copy of the Bible or another--it doesn't really matter as long as we've got a Bible on hand: there's the pocket Bible, the bedside Bible, the really nice Bible only used on special occasions.

With the Qur'an, each and every "true Qur'an" (translations aren't regarded as "true" books, but interpretations) is an embodiment of the faith; it has always been tradition to treat the book with reverence. Perhaps Saudi Arabia mishandles the Bible and doesn't show respect for Chritianity--that's their problem, put pressure on them to stop doing that. It doesn't make mishandling the Qur'an any more laudable. Showing disrespect to the Qur'an means displaying disrespect to the Islamic faith.

Sura 56: 77-79 wrote:
Most surely it is an honored Qur'an, in a book that is protected; none shall touch it save the purified ones.

As Long as it's not in it's original Arabic form then you can handle it however you want so whatever. To Muslims, in it's original Arabic it is the very speech of God and they are God's words not the word of the Prophet Muhammad which is why it is seen as so holy.

Not all Muslims are devout, as are not all Christians. It'd be totally different were it a Bible, and the Bible is as important to Christians as the Kuran to Muslims.

Not really I've met some of the most fundamental/devout of Christians who will openly admit that much of the current versions of the Bible out there are only 50% is actually divinely inspired and the rest is inconsistancies which got either mistranslated or fabricated then included over time. Just as Roman Catholics accept more books in their Bible than the King James Version accepts. I can the names of some of Christianity's most eminent bible Scholars from various university's and church denominations who will openly admit to refusing to believe that Revelations is reliable.

If I'm in prison, and you take my Bible, and do some of the things that the soldiers are accused of, trust me, I'd be very upset. I don't know what "Christians" you've had association with, nor do I care, I can only speak for myself and for those that I know.
