<THE PHYSICS BIT>

Speakers vibrate very rapidly producing ultrasound, above 20kHz, so humans don't hear it (we hear nothing when Torres is in one). This causes individual atoms to vibrate. Because the atoms of dirt and dead skin aren't firmly affixed to the body, they will be loosened. When this happens, they will tend to fall from the body, into a tank, and will be sucked or washed away. We can assume that in Star Trek they have perfected the technique to get all of the dirt from the body and have made a method to suck the dirt away without it piling over your feet.

The reason the dirt swirls is that the vibrations are rapid enough and have enough energy that the dirt is hit by air molecules and moves around the cubicle because they are light enough to do so.

<says an a-level physicist... comments welcome>

Even if they do have sonic showers in the future... nothing can replace a nice hot shower after a long day, or even in the middle of winter. If i had the choice to choose between the two, i'd prefer a water shower b/c of the hot water, but i also would like the sonic shower b/c it'd be a lot more efficient. So i'll have both!

Anywho yeah everyone loves water but water is bulky and that's why Federation Ships don't carry them.

Correct TransWarp! The ISS's showers use pulses of water, and the user has a suction-tube to gather the water, as a lot of it will float around freely... which is not acceptable. Sonic showers are actually being developed for the space program, but are encountering---difficulties.

I see, thats cool, i didn't know that.
