|
I keep hearing "homophobia" and "fear of gays" being tossed around. I don't get it. It's not a disease you can catch, and no one can run up to you and say , "Tag - you're gay!" and run away. So what's to be afraid of?

No. I'm more afraid of a straight guy than a homosexual one. A gay man wouldn't rape me

I think anyone who is afraid of gays is probably gay themselves.

I would say that I wouldnt be afraid.
I've had a friend who was gay. I'm a straight guy but that doesnt mean I can't become friends with anyone who is gay.
So I wouldn't be afraid.

Did you ever stop to think that Anti-Gay people are not afraid but rather just don't like what they are doing? That they don't agree with it? Not physical fear of what they are doing. Yes I know. Phobia mean fear of something. But I don't think the term was made by straight people who disagree with homosexuality. Gay people probably created that term. Becuase they, like most people(Straight or Gay), are under the oppression that people that don't like Gays are scared of them.

Afraid of them? I seriously doubt it. Who would be scared of them? The only thing I can think of is parents being scared their children will become Gay or that Homosexuality will spread further, but the people themselves? I'm not sure...

not at all! I've danced and performed with many gay guys before, and actually they are a blast!! They're super fun to be around 1st off! I had a gay ballet teacher who taugh actually dancing on pointe (there are lots of guys who do dance on pointe b/c it builds a ton of strength in your feet... but they just don't perform on pointe) and he was just the coolest person ever! I miss him so much now! I'm not sure where he is, but he's in some other state dancing there.

Yes, there is. That is why it is called a "phobia". And some people don't think being gay is wrong. Infact I hope it does spread further, maybe people wlould stop making such a big deal about it.

No there isn't. No one is afraid of the people. Its the act and what it represents. How ironic that you all spout off about having an open view towards all opinions, buy you can't have an open view towards an opinion that opposes yours.

I'm afraid of certain kinds of people, so why couldn't (not why shouldn't) someone be afraid of gays? Some people are afraid of really short people. Someone I used to know had a fear of midgets.

First of all, don't call me by my name. You are certainly no friend of mine. Second of all, you must be 10 years old. You certainly act like it. You get really upset when someone has a different view from yours. You need to learn tolerance. Third of all, I was trying to have an intelligent conversation with you. Then again I guess its my fault. "I forgot who I was talking to."
My overall point was that I don't understand what can make people scared of Gays. Thats it. I was trying to show you that not everything is as simple as "They're scared of Gays, that why they hate them!" I was trying to teach you other views in life, because apparently you only care about YOUR views.

Sometimes people are just afraid of things for no reason. I personally, am terrified of giant squid, Have I ever seen one? No. Has anyone I know ever seen/been attacked by one? No. But still I have this strange fear.

I have no idea why either. It is a strange fear, But it does exist.
I didn't intend to come across as getting upset because you have a different view than I do.
No, I am very open minded. I figured you were trying to push your views on to me, and I hate when people do that.
Sorry

Okay. I'm going the clear everything up for you guys. Humans are afraid of change and of the unknown. It's natural, primitive human nature.
One thing i say to myself alot and most of the time is true but occassionally i know it's not.
'There are two types of straight people in the world. The ones that hate you to your face and the ones that hate you behind your back'
That is mostly aimed at males and alot of the time these days it's not true. but also alot of the time it is.
It's not really a fear of gays. But a fear of what there capable of. I remember when i told everyone in my class at college the first thing they all said to me was "God you've got some bottle" and "As long as you don't come onto me, your alright" And THAT is where it starts. Straight people do not like the thought that somone of the same sex as them and someone who is abnormal by traditional terms just possibly might be attracted to them and come onto them. It makes them uncomfortable and doubt themselves so as primitive human males they strike out the only way they know how. With violence. Wether is it physical or verbal they still do it to reassure them selves. This is classic human behavior.
These days when people mention homophobes they are most likely these days refering to "Gay Bashers" the people that are probably religious and would do almost anything to get rid of this imperfection.
Just remember. "There are two types of straight people in the world...."
(And yes i know that quote isn't necessarily true these days but alot of the time people are led to believe it is true and have to sometimes really work hard to fit back into society because of that small few that disagree with sometime about someone that cant be stoped or prevented)
