PostSat Feb 28, 2004 11:50 am    A Guide to Role Playing by syd2002 - All Newbies look!

NOTE** The "Advances" Section seems to be the most popular style of roleplay on STV at the moment, so please try to use this format..

Welcome to the wonderful world of role playing and welcome to the guide to role playing. If your reading this, you seek information on how to RP (Role Play). I hope you find what your looking for and if not pm and I will fix the problem. To understand how to RP entirely it helps to read the whole guide.

Introduction

Roleplaying on stv.com is a very fun experance that will let you do things you cant do in real life. An RPG (Role Playing Game) is about a pretend world were you create a character that you see fit. In this guide there will be headings on the differnt topic I need to cover on roleplaying, enjoy your learning experance.

The Rules

When roleplaying on stv.com you need to follow a set of rules for all RPGs and sometimes another set of rules for a specific RPG. Here are the global rules you must follow.

StarTrekVoyager.Com RPG Rules

 Read StarTrekVoyager.Com Forum Rules
RPGing does not exempt you from these rules.

 One RPG per person
If you are an outstanding RPG GM and many users request you to run additional RPGs, then you may be approved for more. To start a RPG, make a topic with the tag [provisional-RPG] in Role Playing Discussions. Then make a request for it to be approved in the RPG Report/Request Thread. If approved, it will be moved to Role Playing Games. Do not start topics in Role Playing Games without approval. If you have a RPG and would like to lock and start a new one, then request a [RPG-LOCK] by changing your topic name appropriately, then posting a request in RPG Report/Request Thread.

RPGs must have a description and a members list
Have at least a short description of your RPG that makes it unique from others. It is suggested that you color coordinate your Member List.

GREEN = Posts regularly / New Member.
YELLOW = Posts semi-regularly.
RED = Inactive, and maybe removed.
BLUE = Excused from posting

Inactive RPG GMs will have their RPG locked (unless arrangements are made with mods)
If you leave and come back after two weeks, do not expect your RPG to be there. There is no purpose in starting idle RPGs.

Do not interrupt RPGs with join request
If the GM is requesting positions to be filled, then respond. If the RPG has already started, PM the RPG GM (topic starter) and request him to let you join.

Rule Consequences
... Three strikes and you are out.

Reporting Problems/Users
If you have spammers or users breaking rules, then please use the RPG Report/Request Thread or PM the RPG.mods. Include a link to the topic with the problem. If there is no link, then most likely the report will be ignored.

Last Update: Oct 21, 2003 3pm CST

Please follow these rules to the full extent to make things on stv.com easer.

A Character

When you are roleplaying you need a character that you completly customize and control. Your character can be anything you want it to be and it does not have to be you. When joining a RPG on stv.com you need to have a good idea of what your character is going to be in that particular game. Some things that you need to know are:

-Name
-Age
-Sex
-Description (Backround on your characters life)
-Likes
-Dislikes
-Apperance (Describe or Picture)

It really helps to know these things because it helps create a unique character. Sometimes RPG's want you to submit this information so like I said knowing it would be a good idea so you dont have to create a character on the spot.

The Basics

This section will cover the very basics new people need to know. When you post in a RPG there are 6 things that this post can consist of:

-Character Coversation
-Character Coversation not directed to other Character(s)
-Comm Transmission (Speaking to another character through audio transmision)
-Character Actions
-OCC (Out Of Character Chat)
-Character Thoughts

Character conversation is when your character is speaking to someone elses in the RPG.(Go to ''The Advances'' to see help in makeing a descriptive conversation). Three are two differnt ways you can post when you want to make your character talk to another on stv.com. They are ie:

Hey Tom!
or
"Hey Tom!"

Either way is ok, pick one and stick to it.

Character Coversation not directed to other Character(s) is another form of conversation that is not directed to anyone. Its like shouting out in pain when you trip and scratch your knee. Ie:

Work you piece of junk computer!
or
"Work you piece of junk computer!"

Comm Transmission (Speaking to another character through audio transmision) is when spook hits his comm badge and tells Captain Kirk to come to the bridge or when you warn the other ship to not fire or you will back. There is a specail type of tag you need to put in frount and behind your transmission and you need to do this because the other users in the game need to know what type of talking it is. Ie:

=^=Transmission Here=^=
or
=^="Transmission Here"=^=

Character Actions is a very important part of Role Playing because if your character just stands there nad does nothingbut talk it gets very boreing and plus you could not go anywhere in the RPG! You also need to put a specail tage before and after the action to let other users know what your doing. Please not that godmoding is not allowed most of the time (controling other characters)Ie:

*Syd fell off his seat*

Make sure its an action and not converstaion your puting in between the tag

OCC (Out Of Character Chat) is when your not roleplaying and its user to user chat. Sometimes you need to do this to say your going offline or when you want to ask a question about the RPG plot. This chat also goes in a tag to let other users know its OCC, look at examples below.

(I gtg, ttyl)
or
((I gtg, ttyl))

Character Thoughts are when you want to let the other users know what your character is thinking so the next post can build on that, or it could just be plain thoughts. You dont have to put character thoughts in your post if you dont want to but in case you do you have to put a tag, read examples below.

*What is he talking about?*
or
(What is he talking about?)

All these things are used in a RPG to make it better and fun. You dont have to use all of them in the same post, you use them as you see fit.

HERE IS A FULL EXAMPLE

*Syd entered his quarters*

*Syd thought that if he decided to attack the ship he would win*

Yes!

*Syd exited his quarters and went on the bridge*

All weponds online Mr.Spook, fire at will.

(gtg guys, see you later)

You may use " if you like in your post

The Advances

I am currently asking permission from users that have descriptive posts in RP to quote them to give you good examples

This is the last section which will outline how to make your posts descriptive.

When posting you may want to give the other users a better understanding of whats going on, so this section will help you.

Character conversation can often be turned into descriptive by changeing simple words to complex words. Ie:(Quote from a very good rper)

Ronevick wrote:

"Tonight at dinner we're going to rush the arme guards while they're off guard. If your men can distract the guards by talking to them or something my men can take their weapons and shoot em up. From there we'll be armed and my men and I arent going to leave here without some useful information so we're going to have a talk, with the Kommandant. After that, we're heading to the equipment room to get some good artillery to bring down the side entrance, it should be less guarded than the main entrance."

The protoss high templar tremiles moves thrue the domminion base, they had a nice setup, they had also granted him the aria were he was colonising, as well as another ari way to the south and out of harms way. Tremiles was glad of this fact, he would have to get back to the nexus and send some probes to start the second base, hopefully now the nexes had started mass producing those very helpfull little robots, aparently their were alot of minerals on this planet, good thing, they would need them.

Tremiles had to wait two minutes for his carrier to decend and an intercepter picked him up. he was inside shortly, he then ordered the carrier back to the new construction bass to tell them the good news.

Actions can be made more descriptive as well, read examples.

Pah-Wraith wrote:
*Shaq nods and extends his hand shaking Captain Byrants*

"Ah a Nice Firm Handshake I like that, No Captain you appear to have the wrong Idea...Nobobdy above the rank of Commander serves under me; Instead they are given command of a Marine Unit.

You will be given Command of 73 Marines, and when we land on Andoria Prime your Mission will be to lead those Troops into battle to take out the Andorian Soldiers. The other 20 Marine Corps housed on this Vehicle will correspond with you, however my Marine Unit will lead the Charge"

All the types of posting can be changed useing more complex words, therefore makeing the post more complex and descriptive. But there is one huge thing that makes a difference. Naritive type post. This post is used by very few people but one good example is the RPG posts of LanariaRayton. Once I get her permission I will quote a couple of here posts as examples. Anyways a Naritve type of post is like a story, and your the naritive person that Narirates your self. Like this:

LanariaRayton wrote:
"aww you sound generaly concerned about my well fare Shadow... but unfortuantly I am a girl who knows how to take care of herself. And I would love to stay around here and chat with you but I got a ship waiting for me. " she said blowing him a kiss as smoke filled the room from one of her well layed exits she set.

Nova activated her stealth and slipped out of the room running down the hallway. The doors in front of her blew open as Marines came pouring but Nova just slipped to the side as they ran past her and ran out of the exit they created for her.

In Conclusion

This is the end of the RPG of syd2002. I hope you learned something and becuase of it your RP experance will be better. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions regarding the guide pm me and I will get right on it!

This is a really awesome guide. We use slightly different rules on the Skyline, but this is a great place to start.

I created this system.

the problem with it is that you didn't put how often(in days) that a person mut post or not post to get into those slots, creating a confusion that all RPG leaders use their own rules. and it is slightly anoing for the constant RPGer to see a name in green that hasn't posted in a week. and a guy that hasn't posted in two days already in yellow on another forum.

One thing of note, though, that makes me think a new version of this might be called for.

No one really uses the post formats above, such as for transmissions and so forth, anymore. It's more of a paragraph and story format now.

The storyline format is outlined in the "advances" section of the guide RM.
