PostMon May 16, 2005 5:22 pm    Computer Programming

So, who here computer programs? If so, what compiler do you use? What do you tend to create? Are you/have you been in a class for it? Share it with us!

I am in a computer programming class learning Visual Basic on Microsoft Visual Studio. Next year I'll be taking AP computer programming, programming Java, and I hope to start a programming business to run this summer, although my friends will do most of the programming

Hardware man, that's the cool stuff. VBS scripts are alright to use in your network I think, though I just mostly copy and paste it (as is recommended by microsoft ).

I would love too be able too Progam, but its just way too complex. I think i'm gonna stick too a little hacking here and there and a little bit of this and that.

Hardware is indeed cooler. Especially when its New! Ow, i wouldl ove too look under the hood of that new Xbox 360

Was going to go into programming... doing courses in hardware now instead. If I go through the list I can become a qualified Computer Technician, and do the courses parttime.

I used to know a bit of BASIC, and made a couple of games years ago... can't do it now, the languages are too complex.

Hardware is not cooler. Anyone can build hardware, even I could with the proper instructions--and I'm definitely not a hardware person. Software is the way of the future. Software is intangible and extensible, plus easier and cheaper to adapt and produce than hardware.

That being said, I still have enormous respect for all you hardware people. It is you who shall develop faster and faster computers and technology. Keep up the good work (or else).

I can code XHTML and CSS the right way. These aren't really programming languages, however. I am very proficient in PHP, and it's one of my favourite things to do. PHP is a great language because it is open-source, new and still developing, and fast. It's loosely-typed, so you can use anything for anything and still not throw errors (even though typos are terrible and the error messages don't help).

Ugh . . . Java. I tried learning Java, but the sheer amount of code and its complexity made me scream and wish I could gouge out my eyes with several thousand sharp miniature ice picks.

I'm "learning" C++ now. I haven't worked on it for a little. My dream is to write simple text-based games, but I haven't found a good tutorial that gives me the right direction (perhaps even one specifically about making a text-based game) while at the same time concreting my understanding of OOP. That's my major setback, is that I cannot wrap my head around the concept of Object-Oriented Programming. I use Dev-C++ (free and open-source).

This summer, once school is over, I plan to partition my computer and install Linux so I can muck around with that.

^Cool, Tach! And Linux. Whoo. Good luck with that.

And anyways, Computer hardware's cool, but programming's better. I'm getting supplies to build my own PC, though, so, yeah.

Heh, actually, I'm too eager. So I'm downloading the CD images for Debian GNU/Linux now. I'm not a complete idiot though, as I am also backing up my important files just in case I mess up the install.

My main complaint against VB is that it is from Microsoft. Not all Microsoft creations are bad, and the company is one of the largest contributers to software technology. Given the choice, however, between a Microsoft-created language and a non-Microsoft language, I usually choose the non-Microsoft one. I haven't tried VB, so I don't think I'll speak ill of it until I do, and I probably won't since C++ will keep my busy.

^Yeah...problem with using VB if you want to use it for business purposes, you have to, apparently, give Microsoft money. Damn it

My Dad's a logistic supervisor. He taught me to do stuff on Q-Basic when I was five, but I've forgotten it all now. He used to write games for us to play, but now he doesn't. He works at the airport.

Throughout the years I have scrapped the surface of Java, visual basic, sql, php, asp and pearl. I was never that good at that stuff. I was better however at making models and animations in 3d studio max because i understand things better visually.

My primary computer field however is microsoft server/client networking. I am proficient with installations, configuration, troubleshooting windows (server 2003, 2000, xp, nt etc), office, exchange, isa server, iis, dhcp, dns, symantec ghost and antivirus corporate, cisco switches and routers and a few other things I can't think of right now lol.

Hehe. Changing the configuration register was fun too because the next class to come in the people would have no idea what was wrong with it!

I am a programmer.

I'm entirely self-taught. I've used 520x assembly, x86 assembly, BASIC, FORTRAN, PASCAL, COBOL (believe it or don't), VB, C++, Java, PHP, Perl, script (java- and VB-), and (af course) HTML,XML and good ole SQL.

Once you've done machine code, "languages" don't really matter that much; they all do pretty much the same thing - keep you from writing machine code!
