I know that Memorial Day is a US holiday, (May 31st), but most countries have their own version, as well. Since it's coming right up, and given the state of the world right now, I thought it'd be a good idea to honor all our servicemen and women.

We've just had Victory in Europe (VE) day, but our full memorial day november 11th
I salute with honour the men and women who gave their lives for my freedom.
Oh, and I've been to one of those war cemetaries in France. I was 9 and that's when I realised how evil human beings can be to each other.

We do ours the 4th of july. It's mostly WWII related, they even allow German veterans there now, which I think is kind of silly. (After all, who started it  )

We have a lot of holidays here celebrating our country, and our armed forces. Memorial Day is the saaaaaaddest, though. People cheapen it by making it the "biggest cook out day of the year". Tsss.

That's so direspectful!!!   Put C4 on their barbeque... go on... I dare you...
War stories are the best. I've heard loads about the armed forces at Dunkirk when they had to push all the tanks and lorries into the sea so that the germans wouldn't take them.

We stand in the freezing cold in a park in November and have ten minutes silence for our memorial to the dead. Beats any cookout.

It means that you pesky adults don't practice what you preach. Adults are always telling children to be nice and forgive each other and not to discriminate and fight, but hey, adults do it all the time.

Our next holiday is Victoria Day on Monday, May 23. It originally started off as a celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday, then came to symbolize the birthday of every British sovereign and show our British heritage. . . .
Or next "memorial" like holiday is November 11, which we called "Remembrance Day." It's really sad.  Everyone wears little pins that look like poppies and we reminisce over "In Flander's Fields."

November 11 is "Veterans Day" here, and we also have the poppies. The 4th of July is our "party" holiday.

Where I'm from, Memorial Day is somewhat like a combination of July 4th and Veteran's Day. Labor Day is the "big cookout", although the 4th is usually bigger.

We've got less holidays here in Britain than in most countries.
We have both Rememberance Day and Rememberance Sunday (first one 11/11, the 2 minute silence at 11am, the second the closest Sunday to the 11/11, also with a 2 minute silence at 11am).
This year, we'll be having big celebrations to mark 60 years from the end of the Second World War on 10th July. That's our party one... but we're much too dignified to have parties every year apart from New Year, Christmas and maybe Easter.

Yeah, dignified, I'm sure that's the word I'd use. We know who we are, and how hard we had to work to become a nation. I suppose you wouldn't be celebrating the 4th of July. War of the Insurrection?
