People came up with an incredible "cure" for arthritis--gelatin. Especially chicken cartlidge. People were using this quite easily. Then... what happens? Harvard takes it, patents it, and prices it to an insane degree. Therefore no, you may not buy chicken, pound the ends off the bones and then eat them to try and alleviate arthritic problems. You're doing something that you should be paying for. 
What does this illuminate...? Sure, people will come up with things...but the goal of the medical system is not to fix everything. And they will do what they can not to fix everything. I don't have a dislike of doctors (much), but I do dislike the medical system and the things that it witholds, as well as the dogmas they promote without viable medical testing or proof. I find it incredibly flawed.
