I have them, but haven't read them. Now that someone has said that they are worth reading, I probably will.

Both of the first two were good, and ended with cliffhangers.

the Challenger book is better understood if you have read New Earth #6 first, and for that matter you may want to read the entire New Earth series to understand that one fully.

I just finished the first one and started the second, but I have no idea what's going on...I guess I'll have to read the New Earth series.

You should. They're far more fun to read than anything you are forced into, of course, but even so they would be good.

I've now finished books 1-5. All that's left is 6, and 7 which isn't out yet.

For those who haven't read them yet, here is my opinions:

TOS: "One Small Step". A good TOS book, and it introduces a species you see later. A good read, but not strictly vital to the series.

Challenger: "Chainmail". The first book calling itself the "Challenger" series, although the crew was introduced in New Earth #6. If there are more Challenger books, this will become an important read, most likely. As for the Gateways contribution, I'm not sure of its impact on book 7, but so far it seems a completely independant story.

TNG: "Doorways Into Chaos". This is a good book, but not exactly an epic tale. You could read the Gateways series without this one.

DS9: "Demons Of Air And Darkness". This takes place concurrently with the TNG storyline---both of them even share a common scene from different perspectives, and events in each affect the others. A VERY good book, it was hard to put down. It occurs shortly after Section 31: Abyss.

VOY: "No Man's Land". Another good C. Golden book. Not directly associated with the TNG or DS9 books, but you see their effects in this one to a small degree. I won't say more so as not to ruin it.

I'll post my opinion of the New Frontier book once I've read it; it seems that it would also happen simultaneously with the TNG and DS9 books.

I've finished New Frontier: Gateways: "Cold Wars".

It takes place at the same time as the TNG and DS9 books, but the story has a very different feel than either of those did. I liked it a lot. Even if you haven't been keeping up with the New Frontier series, you should still read this book.

Is anyone else disappointed by the last book? It's just the last chapter or two of all the books. Why couldn't they just incorporate that into the original books? (I know, it's a ploy to make more money) Of course the last book is in hard cover too, so it cost four times as much to buy it. (I paid 25 bucks)
