Sun May 08, 2005 8:45 pm 60 Years: Victory in Europe Day |
|
Okay . . . I'm kind of surprised no one posted this. I'll give you the benefit of a doubt and assume you were at a VE-Day party and that's why.
But yes, it is Victory In Europe Day. Sixty years ago today marks the official ending of World War II hostilities in Europe. This is important to me because this year we have started learning about World War II in History class, so I'm finally learning about a very important part of our heritage.

To celebrate VE-Day, the Royal Canadian Mint has released a five-cent coin similar to the Victory Nickel in circulation in 1943:

I've been watching stuff regarding this on the History Channel. It's incredibly interesting.

/\ how can they be homosexual when they killed homosexuals?
It's good that people still celebrate days like this and remember how many people died for our freedom.

I was watching all the stuff on telly. I'm also surprised it wasn't posted earlier (I didn't come back online yesterday).
No big celebration here- yet. We're doing a big village thing on 10th July, to celebrate the end of the whole war. I was at a community meeting last Wednesday though listening to all the old people decribing what it was like during the war. Was very interesting, especially the Canadian pilot that crashed his Hurricane not far from where I live (January 1942, if anyone's interested).

I'm probably reminded every day about what happended during World War 2. I don't need a second remembrance day (we already remember it on May 5th).
i watch a lot of discovery channel and world War 2 comes up about every 10 minutes... So i know what happened, its more horrible than most people can comprehend, and its happening again...

Ugh . . . nothing like celebrating VE Day than having a dysfunctional government.
Introducing the Dysfunctionally Canadian Timeline of an Embarrassing Childish Government:
First, the government recalls our Veteran Affairs minister because they fear political non-confidence motions. Only the Governor General and some other polticial non-entities remain.
I suppose that something happened . . . because Martin and Harper finally pulled things together and all the party leaders agreed to go to the celebrations in Europe. Unfortunately, here is the most embarrassing part. . . .
They arrive late! People are literally cleaning up after the celebrations when the Canadian government arrives! They arrive late, and a special ceremony must be organized in order to accomodate them!
I wonder if any of our party leaders have grown up, then I remember they are politicians. They should stop fighting, and recognize that time is precious. A day like this will never come again--veterans are aging, times are changing. And they squander it because of political maneuvering. . . .
