My view of the Harry Potter saga has been a long and twisted one that has changed with each release of a media item and continues to develop. I first learned of the book several years ago, in Grade 6, when I saw a friend reading it. This in and of itself was an anomaly, as my classmates seldom read lengthy books, so I was curious from the onset. I bought the book, read it, and it was good.
The first five books are very compelling and well-written, I think that Rowling has done a good job at creating a magical world and drawing her readers into it. The story is not as profound as I might like it, but Rowling's style is captivating and the story is entertaining. Unfortunately, as I grow up and continue reading the books, I begin to grow disillusioned with Harry Potter.
Rowling said that Potter would grow up with her fans--and he is, but he's not growing fast enough. This is partly because she isn't publishing one book per year anymore--I don't blame her, it is difficult to write a book, but the added difficulty of an aging audience does not help. Furthermore, I think that Rowling is anxious at leaving the younger audience behind if she departs too far from her original characters. While Rowling was writing, I moved on. This does leave the potential for me to enjoy the series later on, once the characters mature more. Overall this does not detract from my enjoyment of reading the books, but I no longer get a sense of fulfillment from reading them.
The movies, in my opinion, are not the best adaptations around. Richard Harris was the best thing that happened to those movies, and it is unfortunate that he died. I saw the first movie in theatres and the second one on television (I haven't seen the third yet) and none could compare to the book. That's just the problem--you can't compare them. The movies are stunningly done and set perfectly for their realistic visual medium, but I think the experience of reading the book is more rewarding then watching the movies. I particularly noticed some instances when they skipped a scene or changed a minor detail--not obsessively so, but only when it was something I had originally liked. This is not unique to the Harry Potter series, all books encounter this during adaptations. I hope that in the future, the other books make a smoother transition to film.
Rowling did a lot to bring the fantasy world a mainstream audience. Her fiction is not astounding by itself, but it does open up readers and it's a nice way to introduce them to fantasy and heavier fiction. The story is enriching and entertaining, and carefully crafted. Concluding, as I said originally, the Potter saga is one about which I'm ambivalent. I love it and I hate it for its originality and derivations. So in short, I'm not a fanatic, but I think I'm hooked.

Haaaaarry's movies stink, books ain't all that good, though they can be amusing, buuuuuuuuut plot holes all over the places. Doesn't mean I don't have fun reading them or seeing the movies though!

Oh i'm SUPER excited for the new book!! I never read them untill 4 books had already been published.
My mom started reading the 1st one, and told me about it. I had no desire to read it at the time, i had absolutly no idea what the books were even about. Then when my mom started telling me about the 1st few chapters in the 1st book, i became interested, and read them. I was hooked! I read the entire 1st book on the drive down to Madison! Absolutly love 'em!! I'm lucky b/c all my friends are big fans too! My ballet teacher Amber has HP trivia, so the bunch of us have played that many-a-time! Love it! I've got all the books on CD too - made copies from the books on CD of HP that Amber had as well. Quite a few discs, but it's a great way to pass the time in the car. I spend 1/2 my day driving places, so it's definitly a good time!
The 4th movie comes out in November-ish too i think. Hopefully it's better than the 3rd movie.. that one was awful!

I don't like the movies at all.
The books I used to be a really big fan of, however, I don't find myself as excited about it as I used to be. However, I have all of the Harry Potter books that have been released to this point, and I still like them, even though it is not with as much enthusiasm as I once did. So I will probably end up buying the sixth, whenever it comes out, and ditto for the seventh, just so I can finished what I started...what, 5 years ago?

That happens to me (the fad dies) with lotsa things. Like i'll still like it, but just not be as into it as i was before. That's how it is with Lord of the Rings right now. STV i'm really into at the moment, Phantom of the Opera i'm really back into, and Harry Potter i'm not going crazy over it - but haven't forgotten the love. Once the next book comes out and i read it, then i'lll be a freak again.

Lol, yeah, with the last book I wasn't going to buy it right away, but I decided to just glance at my sisters copy. Was hooked, had to go get my own copy because we were fighting over who's turn it was to read . I don't know if I will be that enthusiastic again though, just because of my age, but hey, ya never know .

I was asking a question. You don't have to be so snippy about it.

Perhaps "snippy" would have stayed home had she not had to deal w/ RM's backseat moderation attempts before...

Mmhmm, we've had this discussion before, let's not have it again.
BTW, I don't like Harry Potter.

Fine. And me neither. The films were okay, but the books...no.

The films are scum!!! All the kids in them are little brats who go to drama school, believe me, loads of bimbos I know auditioned for it.
The books- standable. The third was my favourite. The fifth put me right off- confusing plot line and she killed off the only good character- Sirius Black! Come on, he was the best! I once had a freaky dream I married him...
The fifth was odd because when they were all dying it was confusing and then Sirius fell through an evil curtain thing and died and it didn't really make any sense to me. I think The Edge Cronicles are better, they have pictures, but recently they've gone downhill too .
I'm so bored I've started writing my own stories.

I like the books and the movies... though I really think any story line involving Hagrid as the main ccharacter is just a waste of read. So it's hard to believe that she's writing an entire book about him. That is... unless the Half blood prince is.... Neville or something. Book 5 made me mad because that was my favorite character who "left" in the end. Stupid JK.
But as the books grow longer, I really am less jazzed about reading them. That would be the case with 6.

Harry's a half blood- his mum was a muggle and his dad was a pure breed. Maybe he's become super obsessed with himself or has got multiple personality disorder, and she wanted to call the book Harry Potter and Himself, but that sounded lame.
Or something equally as unbelievable.
The cover looks crap, and I judge a lot of books by their covers. But not people. So many of us are ugly (me included) that if i went around judging people by their looks I'd never get anywhere. Plus I'd get punched a lot.
Now, if you excuse me, I shall depart. I have to read Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy before I see the movie next monday.
