I'm not saying it's right, just that they probably wouldn't die. I disagree with it as I implied.

^I didn't quote or indicate to your post, Jeremy. Don't take statements so personally.

Link, you should read this article, it discusses how being a multiculturist isn't good, due to the fact that it allows us to turn a blind eye to human rights violations, and more importantly, it's written from a liberal perspective, so you may respect it more than a conservative trying to cram their ethics down your throat.

This reminds me of a ceremony held in either Mexico or somewhere further south, where, in a religious ceremony people are expected to climb a long stairway on their knees while carrying a candle. The authorities are trying to get people to use glow-sticks instead, because evey year several older ladies accidentally catch fire, sometimes igniting those around them.

There's a big difference between multiculturalism and Anthropology.

Athropologists strive to see things from am emic perspective without overstepping into Multiculturalism, which then becomes bad. When using an Emic perspective, one tries to see things without trying to shoving his own cultures beliefs and feelings upon that culture, but only to a point.

And that was kind of like a trust thing and to see if Abraham was faithful to the Lord

Hmm, it probably traumatises them, but I suppose it could be seen as a baptism, with mud and leaves.
If they did it to older children, such as a rite of passage at the age of 16, I think it would be more humane, and I would actually quite like to go through with it. It would be an interesting experience, especially if it was completely silent as it happen. If it was noisy, it would be like you were being buried from society.
They are humane enough to knock out the children with drugs though. I would like to go thorugh it fully percieving, like a floation tank. It could put you more in touch with the earth and the world around you.
Anyway it's not a religious thing. It's cultural, like many other horrific things, such as the circumsisation of women in parts of africa. I have grown up around Indians all my life and I know a lot about their religious beliefs and this is not one of them.
This is perhaps their way of saying thankyou for a child, just as the aztecs used to bleed their children and throw them down wells.

Oh people, don't be so touchy about it. If this is in thier culture..so be it. I doubt the kids actually die from this. It is kind of wierd but, what can you do?
