PostTue Apr 12, 2005 7:35 pm    Summer election comeing in Canada

We have another federal election comeing up here in Canada where I live. We just had one last summer and the liberials got in. Now im afraid that the Conservatives are gonna get in and everything will go down hill. The man running for Prime Minister has alot of crazy ideas I dont like and well I dont want him to get in but I cant control that I just hope that either the Liberials or the NDPs get in. Ok Im rambling now I will stop..LOL

Er . . . no we don't. I'm glad that you brought up the topic of Canada's precarious government, however, because I've been following the sponsorship scandal and minority politics quite closely and I relish discussing the situation.

There is the possibility of an election, but an election is not definite yet. This will depend greatly on the outcome of the Gomery Inquiry. If the Liberals are found to be corrupt, what will this mean to our party politics? Recent polls indicate that the Liberals are losing support, but the sample of these polls have been questioned.

Both the Conservatives and NDP have stressed that they will not call another election at this time, that they will listen to what the people have what to say. Of course, this means nothing, since I believe that if they see an advantage in an election, they will call one.

This said, an election will be dependent on the Liberals' actions during the next few months. The way things are looking now, however, I don't think one will be coming in the summer, as the Liberals are losing support but still have clout.

I revise my opinion after today. An election does seem more likely. Hopefully several things, despite the loss of Liberal support, will counter the Tory agenda:

  • The Conservatives might be able to pull it off on their own, but an election would be more easily precipitated if they could get the Bloc Quebeois and even the NDP behind them on this. However . . .
  • The NDP have been adamantly saying that the "voters" will decide when the next election is. This is probably because as much as having Jack Layton as PM would make Jack Layton a very happy person, the NDP doesn't really have the money for an election . . .
  • The Bloc is not being seduced by the Tories' wining and dining national unity speech. Hopefully friction between these two parties will be enough to prevent any sort of coalition being formed to topple the Liberal government.

I'm not defending the Liberals. I agree with their philosophy, but their policy and management decisions are terrible. Unfortunately, I find them a better alternative to the Conservatives (Harper scares me a bit . . .) or the NDP (Layton needs more publicity). If the outcome of the Gomery Inquiry harms the Liberals, it could have lasting repercussions for federalism as many politicians have mentioned. Lastly, I don't think that an election would do any good right now, especially considering the party choices.
