Pope John Paul II dies in Vatican

Pope John Paul II, one of the longest serving pontiffs in history, has died at the age of 84.

He died on Saturday evening following a series of worsening health problems including heart failure.

The Polish-born Karol Wojtyla became Pope in 1978, taking a conservative stand on issues such as abortion, contraception and women's rights.

He was the most widely travelled pontiff and visited more than 120 countries during his 26-year papacy.

'Serene'

Pope John Paul II died at 2137 local time (1937 GMT) after suffering from heart and kidney problems and unstable blood pressure.

His condition deteriorated suddenly on Thursday night with a high fever caused by an infection of the urinary tract.

The infection brought on "septic shock and a cardio-circulatory collapse", the Vatican said in a statement.

The Pope then received the Saint Viaticum, a Catholic rite for the sick and dying.

The Vatican had announced on Friday that though he was gravely ill he had been conscious, lucid and serene.

Millions of Catholics across the world gathered in churches and in the open air to pray for the Pope.

The pontiff had been suffering from breathing troubles, exacerbated by the progress of Parkinson's Disease, an incurable condition from which he had been suffering for nearly a decade.

He appeared briefly at the window of his Vatican apartment on Easter Sunday to bless the faithful, but was not able to speak.

It was the first time during his 26-year pontificate that the Pope had delegated the main Easter ceremonies to his cardinals.

He tried again to speak to the faithful a few days later - a sign of his extraordinarily strong will, correspondents say.

Fall of communism

John Paul's papacy nearly ended in 1981 when he was shot and seriously wounded as he toured St Peter's Square in Rome.

After a long period of recovery he visited and forgave the would-be assassin.

I... know that it would be equally ridiculous to believe that it was the Pope who brought down communism with his own hands
Memory and Identity
Written by the Pope

John Paul's reign saw radical changes in the world including the collapse of communism and the spread of Aids.

Although plagued by ill health throughout the latter part of his papacy he maintained his international schedule and in 2000 made a poignant pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

He also made a final, nostalgic return to his homeland in 2002.

Born Karol Wojtyla in 1920 near Krakow, Poland, John Paul was an excellent sportsman in his youth.

Pope John Paul II will be remembered by thousands of people. My whole family is Catholic. My house is full of tears at the moment as well as my grandmothers house which is in Louisville.

He believed in our children; he believed in our teenagers that we are the future. He was the way for many teens/children to follow.

May God bless him with the largest mansion on the tallest hill with the love and happiness that he may have never found in life.

Don't let the memories die

God bless all of you,

I've never known too much about the legacy of the Pope until now, but what I see shows me that he was a fantastic man. I am saddened by his death, but also happy. May he rest in peace. A good man--one of the world's most influencial men--has died.

While mourning the loss of our Holy Father, let us also celebrate his life and the legacy and impact that he left with us to remember him by. He is now with the Lord our God in the kingdom of heaven, may he enjoy the fullness of life, we pray to the Lord.

World Leaders Mourn the Lose of Pope John Paul II

LONDON, England (CNN) -- World leaders have been paying tribute to Pope John Paul II, who died Saturday.

U.S. President George W. Bush said: "Americans had special reasons to love the man from Krakow." He described John Paul as a source of inspiration for "millions of Americans" and many others. Bush described the late pope as "one of history's great leaders." (Full story)

French President Jacques Chirac praised Pope John Paul II's "unshakable faith, exemplary authority and admirable ardor" and said he "touched spirits and hearts" with his courage and determination.

"An enlightened and inspired priest, he devoted himself to responding to the search for sense and the thirst for justice that is expressed today on all continents," Chirac said in a statement.

History "will retain the imprint and the memory of this exceptional sovereign pontiff, whose charisma, conviction and compassion carried the evangelical message with unprecedented resonance on the international stage," Chirac added.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said: "Throughout a hard and often difficult life, he stood for social justice and on the side of the oppressed, whether as a young man facing the Nazi occupation in Poland or later in challenging the communist regime. He never wavered, never flinched, in the struggle for what he thought was good and right."

German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said: "Pope John Paul II wrote history. Through his work, and through his impressive personality he changed our world." He praised the pope's work for "peace, human rights, solidarity and social justice."

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said: "We are all grateful for the tireless work and suffering that he bore incessantly against every form of totalitarianism, violence, oppression and moral degradation in the name of the values of the Catholic Church that are also the supreme values of human dignity and solidarity."

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said the pope was a man of peace and had been a great supporter of the United Nations. "He ... (was) extremely concerned about the world we lived in, and like me, he also felt that in war, all are losers." said Annan.

Philippine President Gloria Arroyo led the nation in expressing a "deep sense of grief" over the death the pope. "Our people receive the news of his death with a deep sense of grief and loss. He was a holy champion of the Filipino family and of profound Christian values that make everyone of us contemplate everyday, what is just, moral and sacred in life," Arroyo said.

Lech Walesa, who led Poland's Solidarity movement which won power after a decade of struggle and hastened the collapse of the whole Soviet bloc, said Polish-born John Paul inspired the drive to end communism in Eastern Europe. "(Without him) there would be no end of communism or at least much later and the end would have been bloody," Walesa said.

Israel's foreign minister, Silvan Shalom said in a statement: "He promoted inter-faith understanding and dialogue, with a willingness to address the past, and a profound determination to build a future of understanding and brotherhood between all faiths,". He called John Paul's passing "a great loss...for humanity as a whole."

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said: "We will miss him as a distinguished religious figure, who devoted his life to defending the values of peace, freedom and equality. He defended the rights of Palestinians, their freedom and independence."

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II spoke of her deep sorrow. "The Queen also remembers well the work of Pope John Paul II for Christian unity, including closer ties between the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches," said a statement released by Buckingham Palace.

Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher praised the pontiff's role in toppling communism. "Millions owe him their freedom and self respect. The whole world is inspired by his example," she said. "His life was a long struggle against the lies employed to excuse evil. By combating the falsehoods of communism and proclaiming the true dignity of the individual, his was the moral force behind victory in the Cold War."

Ireland's President Mary McAleese said John Paul II had been a pillar of the modern world, serving the Catholic Church and the cause of all humanity.

Fidel Castro's communist government fondly recalled Pope John Paul II's visit to Cuba seven years ago. During a hastily called news conference, Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque said the nation's leadership and people had received the news of John Paul's passing "with profound sorrow," The Associated Press reported.

(Made an annoucement. I'm pretty sure this death is a big enough event...)

RIP Pope Jean Paul II. I don't know much about him besides he was Polish, and the first non-Italian Pope, but from what I heard, he was loved by many.

^ Exactly. No doubt in my mind that he will rest in peace and that he's in a far better place now where he hasn't got the restrictions of his weak body that he had on earth.

The pope was such a cool guy. Since I went to a catholic school up until now, I wound up doing a report on him in 7th grade. He seemed like a fun guy.

As a friend of mine put it to me, () many people have now lost their "spiritual father". This is a great loss, and he will be mourned an missed not just by the world Catholics, but by the Protestants such as myself.

RIP John Paul II
