PostWed Mar 23, 2005 5:46 am    to be shipped or not to be shipped?

Since the cancellation of Enterprise, there's been a lot of discussion from cast and crew alike that when the series returns it will need to be revamped somewhat and given a sharper edge.

I've been thinking of how to address this. One pivotal characteristic of the show that will determine its change is as to whether or not it will be on a ship? What do you think?

I definitely want it to be on a ship, after all, that is what Star Trek to me is about. I know we all have our own perceptions of how the unknown should be explored and unwrapped, but to me, the best way to do it is on a ship. I wasn't a hug DS9 fan, TNG and VOY are still my favourites to this day.

Nevertheless, if it is on a ship, I think the show needs to be shaded in a darker tone. How it will do this is beyond me, but I have had my thoughts. I was thinking maybe showing the more war-arc side of Trek. For instance, remember Picard's Enterprise in the season 3 episode "Yesterday's Enterprise"? Something like that, the feel of constantly being at threat and on edge is what the series needs. Voyager had that from time to time but then reverted back to the TNG mission statement a lot which made the series predictable at times (brilliant though it was).

One thing the series could do is introduce on-going conspiracies and tie them into Romulan wars and things like that. I'm looking forward to reading the new series Star Trek: Titan, the problem is though, I think it's trying to get Trek back to its roots, I think the time for that has passed since that's what Enterprise tried to achieve.

On the other hand, we couldn't stretch one war out over 7 years. Just look at how Voyager exploited the whole Borg thing. And I fear the same thing about the new Battlestar Galactica. I just feel i'll be over the whole Cylon thing by the end of Season 2.

An arc-based series with a number of wars and conspiracies would be great. I haven't seen Season 4 of Enterprise, but apparently that's the best Star Trek has been since DS9, even the most anti-Enterprise fans of Season 1 and 2 have admitted it. Why Enterprise got axed....well, I can't tell you because I haven't seen it yet but the decline of fans was due to how repetative the show got.

I think Battlestar Galactica is going to be the new model in which sci-fi is structured on. We need something confronting like that now, it doesn't seem acceptable anymore just to have philosophical sub-texts anymore. It needs to be risque, action driven, dramatic and overtly honest about human flaws. At the moment, Star Trek fulfils each of those criteria at times but not to its potential.

But my final answer- a ship.

Personally, I preferred the station much more than a ship. But that's just me.
And, the part of your post that I most disagreed with was the word risque--when Voyager decided to up the ante by hiring Jeri Ryan to make the show more sexually oriented, I thought the quality of the show went down because they started concentrating more on the physical beauty of the actress instead of the storylines.
However, your post was really thought out. Good job!

Yes i too think it should be on a ship but still i wouldn't mind it being on a station.

What your saying is going against everything startrek is about. Star Trek has hidden meanings in it's episodes which deal with some of the things that are happening in real life. Star Trek is a guidline for the Future. Yes i must admit i did love the diminion war and DS9 was the Darkest and most Human like series ever made of star trek. However. This should not happen again. Star Trek should go back to it's roots.

Most Trek fans hae enterprise so much because of how they apparently screwed up the timeline. Not because they were exloring and there wasn't much action. With enterprise season 3 it becamse probably Darker than DS9 ever was. Season 4 yes i agree it is excellent and it is slowly lightening up showing the aftermath of the Xindi threat and how life is slowly returning to normal.

With Battlestar Galactica it's about the lack of technology. with most Sci-fi these days they rely on technology to save the day. But with battlestar Galactica it shows a lack of technology and how they have to cope with the Cylon situation. Having advanced technology in the BSG world means almost certain death. Cylons can easily combat against advanced technology. So "Rag Tag Fleet" had to retro fit everything it had relying on people intead of machinery. That was the only way to be able to survive against the Cylons. It is extremely dark and depressing. Just the kind of change Sci-Fi was crying out for.

I'm not saying that action and space dattles are bad because...well...i love them but one of the main reasons why startrek became so great was becuase of it's story lines which deal with problems we have in this world accept they throw a few aliens into discuse it making an excellent episode and it leaves you happier and have a slightly different outlook on life.

this mainly happened in TOS & TNG and it is a fact that TNG is the most popular of the star trek series to date. They must have been doing something right.

I don't really like TNG or VOY actually. They are cool though. Wait let me rephrase that, I don't like those two shows as much as DS9. I'll tell you why. Continuity. No I don't mean Trek cannon. I mean charecter continuity. The thing I dislike is that those shows would never reshow a charecter minus the main charecters. Sometimes they would, but it was a rare thing. The only people VOY and TNG gave us over and over is Wesley Crusher and Naomi Wildman. Yipee. Imagine if DS9 made the Dominion a threat in one episode. That would have been terrible. DS9 balanced the Dominion War very nicely. Unlike VOY who beat us over the head with the Borg and very boring episodes. The Borg suddenly were no longer a threat. A tiny Intrepid ship blowing up Borg left and right, when a show told us earlier that a borg Cube can take on 20 Federation ships and win. DS9 had this HUGE cast because it was always about everyone, not someone. They were still able to evolve each charecter independently. VOY definitly did NOT do that. Sisko went from being a broken Captain to an Emissary. Odo went from being an unknown sample in a test tube to becoming a Founder, rulers of the Gamma Quadrant. Even Rom, a minor charecter, went from being a waiter at a bar to the Grand Nagus! All the charecters cam full circle, good and bad. The show walked that lin brilliantly. I would definitly push for another station, but all these damn VOY boppers will crap their pants in anger. Does it have to be dark? No it doesn't, but I hope it doesn't go back to being TNG/VOY happy. There was never a real threat on that show. Does it need another arc thing? YES! Im sick of how TNG/VOY would solve a problem and just ride off into the sunset.

Voyager is the best and DS9 is next in line. TNG is ok.

I would prefer it to be on a ship rather than a station because I didn't get along with DS9 too much. Although if it was a Starfleet station instead of a rusty old one, I might like it.

I agree with you founder about the characters.

I think that yes i would like to see it on a starship and a station. I dunno maybe something like large federation starbase and maybe something like and Akira class or a new class of ship assigned to it. But i think there should be slightly more episodes exploring etc with there ship than DS9 had.

Heh my RPG is based off of tht station. I would definitly support a show like that. Oooo! Akira class! You have good taste C1988. Thats one of my favorite class ships. I wish they would make a show out of that one.

Thanks!

Yeah i think it would be good to see that. I mean we do know that there are alot of starbases like that. Even near the edge of federation space. So it would be nice to see that and im pretty sure that an akira class has a high warp capabilitie. Maybe it could explore the galactic rim in a three part episode or something and we'd still get to see lots of aliens and there ships and lots of federationc crews and ships etc etc

DS9 was like, the best Trek, and it was on a station. It makes for better archs, and more characters.
