Mon Feb 28, 2005 6:10 pm Los Angeles is flooded! |
|
I think the world is gonna end or sumthin, cause in a normal rainy season Los Angeles normally gets about 18" of rain, and over the past 2 weeks we have gotten 38". Not to mention the mudslides, and how deadly they can be. The hollywood hills beautiful homes are being destroyed, the pot holes on the roads are deadly... also we were on tornado warnings. A tornado in LA?
What to do???

Repeat after me:
Most scientists agree there is no direct evidence for global warming.
Most scientists agree there is no direct evidence for global warming.
Most scientists agree there is no direct evidence for global warming.
And so on.
There, that's better, isn't it?

It is true. There really isn't that much evidence of global warming. And that that there is, is caused naturally.

What if he was saying what you thought he was saying? It was clearly a joke anyway.

You're very blind if you can't see the evidence for global warning. Yourself.

Um, I do see global warming, and I do see it happening, but it is NOT a dangerous threat, nor imminent, and much of, if not most of it, occurs naturally. That's a word that you environmentalists have to learn

They know it occurs naturally. What they say though is that man is causing this to happen more rapidly.

That can't be denied--but what can be disputed is the extent.

Well, if you want to see it like that, go ahead. At least you do see it happening yourself. I (of course) see it myself too; but this time, it was reversed, appearantly. We got a minimum temperature of -20.7 degrees Celsius 2 nights ago in Holland, which is a new record.
I think that the question wether the global warming is natural or not is still up for debate.
I do see the issue as an imminent threat, however, since I live in the west of Holland, just above sea level.

When scientists use the term "global warming", they are talking about tenths of a degree C! What people must understand is that the Earth is a giant heat engine with water as a working fluid. The things we call "weather" and "climate" are the attempts by the system to reach equilibrium. "Global warming" causes water (on large scale) to move from place to place. The obvious effects are melting ice, but the real consequences are higher variability in weather patterns. Droughts and floods become more severe and less predictable. Rivers dry up (like in Madascar), mountain tops lose their snow caps (like in South America). Parts of the US have received "100 year floods" in 2 of 5 years. In the Artic, there are places where the "permafrost" is melting part of the year. Plant ranges are moving from the equator towards the poles. And so on. Any one of these things could be dismissed as a statistical fluke, but taken all together they indicate human activity is changing our planet.

But these tenths of a degree Celsius will make the sea level rise 10-100 centimetres in the 21st century... Which will flood quite a lot of land.

Sorry, I didn't read the last part. But yes, I believe that Global Warming is real, and that human activity IS adding to it, but NOT too much. I apologize

Ok, thanks for clearing that up with me, although please read all of it next time,
I believe that it is adding to it. I cannot say how much though, and no one else can. I believe that we should be trying to sort it out sooner than later though.
((Is it just me or are a lot of my posts looking republican recently? ))
