PostFri Mar 04, 2005 6:57 pm    The first Q?

I have just watched the TOS 1st season episode The Squire Of Gothos, and it struck me immediately how similar the episode is to Encounter At Farpoint:

The antagonist (Squire Trelane) is an all-powerful entity with loud and exaggerated manners, dressed in an archaic military uniform. The entity at one point appears on the bridge of the Enterprise and no one can do anything about it. It seems amused by the Earthlings' behavior, but its motives remain a mystery.

Eventually Trelane forces Kirk to take part in an historical courtroom farce.

*SPOILER BELOW*

In the end we are shown how Trelane is just a small child, being called back in by his superbeing parents. "But you promised I could have this planet??" Apart from this ending (and the fact that Trelane apparently uses machines to do his "miracles") this must have been the inspiraion for Encounter At farpoint.

As a sidenote, "Squire Trelane" is almost identical to the name "Squire Trelawney," one of the main characters in Stevenson's Treasure Island.

Many people have made this observation. It is an interesting theory and does ahve merit but I don't agree with it. The Q usually say who they are. They don't hide it. I think Trelana was just another VERY powerful non corporeal being.

I'm inclined to agree with you. My theory was really that the episode was the inspiration for the one that introduced Q though.

I read a Star Trek novel, called Q Squared, that claimed that the Squire of Gothos was, in fact, a young Q. It was a very good novel and I highly recommend it.

i believe that the squire has to be a younger Q (or another letter) because if he was older, he would have said who he was and not have hidden it so much
