Wed Mar 02, 2005 11:17 pm Bush welcomes Sox to White House |
|
Quote: | WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush invited the World Series champions to his house on Wednesday, and Red Sox Nation descended en masse.
There were babies with Red Sox hats, young girls and business executives sporting Curt Schilling jerseys, women and boys wearing Boston T-shirts. They walked around the White House grounds wearing the Red Sox colors, started Fenway Park-like cheers while waiting for the president and wouldn't let go of another magical moment brought by their favorite team's World Series title.
With a vibe recalling last October, Bush welcomed the Red Sox to the South Lawn of the White House to honor the 2004 World Series champions on a cold, windy afternoon. Much of the emotion that had come out during the Red Sox's surprising post-season title run bubbled up again as the president gave them a heartfelt tribute.
"So, like, what took you so long?" Bush asked, eliciting huge laughter from the crowd. "I'm proud to be joined by the vice president. He's a Chicago Cubs fan. So, like, he knows what you've been through."
Bush, a former owner of the Texas Rangers, repeatedly praised a Boston team whose World Series victory seemed to touch a nerve in baseball fans everywhere. It ended the supposed Curse of the Bambino and delighted Red Sox supporters the world over.
"I love the way this team played, and so do baseball fans," Bush said. "I mean, this is a team that won eight games in a row when it wasn't supposed to. It's kind of courage -- and a couple of stitches. You answered 86 years of prayers. That's an amazing feat, isn't it? I mean, when the Red Sox won, people all over the world cheered. They cheered in New England, and they cheered in Baghdad, Iraq."
And they cheered at the White House on Wednesday. The ceremony was scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. but began about 23 minutes late, even though the Red Sox came on the podium around 3:25. The self-described "bunch of idiots," who drew plenty of attention for their long hair and unshaven faces, looked more like models or business executives.
Most wore stylish suits and ties. Johnny Damon appeared in a tan suit, his famous hair and beard still in place, while Schilling was clad in a dark suit and stylish blue tie. The fans were talking about the team's look for the first few minutes, but quickly made it seem like a baseball game while waiting for Bush.
"Jaaaaa-son Varitek," boomed one loud fan. Varitek responded with a wave and a grin.
A few minutes later, the same fan had some more to say. "Hey, Johnny Daaaa-mon, how 'bout a wave?" Done.
The chants, lasting several minutes, started soon after that. "Here we go, Red Sox, here we go. Here we go, Red Sox, here we go."
There also were the signs. One fan held up a sign that spoke volumes: "Jeter and A-Rod wish they were here." The television cameramen and photographers loved it, taking several pictures.
Longtime Red Sox fan Dave Shott watched it all and smiled. Wearing a blue Nomar Garciaparra jersey and a blue Red Sox cap, Shott talked about the World Series championship.
"I cried after they won it all," said the 38-year-old Shott, a White House producer for Fox News Channel. "The pent-up frustration from listening to the guys from New York -- finally, we got retribution."
This also was a day about history. Boston baseball heroes like Dom DiMaggio and Jimmy Piersall were present, and Bush paid tribute to both in his remarks.
DiMaggio felt a bit unsure about if he should even be at the ceremony. He played for the Red Sox for all 10-plus seasons of his entire big league career, but balked at first when Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.) asked him to come to the event.
"I was a little uneasy about it because I didn't have anything to do with it," DiMaggio said. "But after a second call from Congressman Foley, I am so glad I did."
The stars were out as the event drew a lot of people from a lot of places. Politicans like Sens. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) were among those who made it. Lieberman is an avowed Yankee fan, but he said he couldn't pass up this day.
"I had to come for three reasons," he said with a smile. "I love baseball. I had to represent the Red Sox fans in my [constituency]. And I had to scout the other side."
The Red Sox clearly enjoyed the day from start to finish. They spoke with reporters upon leaving the White House, when they were en route to nearby Walter Reed Army Medical Center for a visit with soldiers.
David Ortiz smiled afterward, saying it was a wonderful day for the entire team. The Red Sox brought about 18 players from the championship club to the event, with team officials and family members coming along for the ride.
Damon, a big fan of the president, said Wednesday was a great day -- one the Red Sox hoped to repeat.
"We're definitely going to try to get back here next year," Damon said. "We don't have to live with The Curse, and that makes it a lot easier."

He was a free agent. Wanted lots of $$$$. He's getting old, and has a bad arm a lot, so he wasn't a wise investment at that price.

Yea, we were his daddy! But i must admit, I was upset when he went to the NYM cause Pedro created a lot of yankee VS bosox drama, And I loved every minute of it!
Maybe BOSOX can win in 2118??
