I'm in favour of turning it into a Black History Week rather than a Month, and the week that "Kwanza" is on seems to be the most convinient week to hold it on, but I suppose the whole month is extreme.

You are wrong there. Everyone is not racist. I'd love to go overseas and live in a different country for a while, but yes I'd come back, because it's my home, not because I'm racist. And yes, I'm proud to be an American, because this country has given me freedom. Freedom that was bought with the blood of MANY different colored people. Not to mention the fact that if I didn't have the slightest bit of pride in my own country, I'd have no desire to make it better.
I still however think that we should ease up on specific histories. You all keep pointing out that blacks were slaves... well ya know what? I've never had a slave and I never treated anyone like one. Like I pointed out before, don't try to make this generation pay for the mistakes of those before us. I don't think that focusing so much on a bad time in our history is going to help teach our kids not to be racist. Focus on the good, not the bad. Show them what we can be, not what we were.

Totally disagree with you. Skin color, heritage, religion has nothing to do with you, or how "good" or "bad" you are. It's like the "blame society for the way I am" crap. Ulitimately, YOU are responsible for YOU.

Yes, but YOU are not responsible for everyone else. That's where things like racism and prejudice come in.
(more of the song)
"Everyone makes judgements (da-dada-da-da)
based on race
(spoken)
Now not big judgements like who to hire or who to buy a newspapers from.
Right!
No, just little judgements like maybe that Mexican busboys should learn to speak goddamn English!
Right!"

And as I am not responsible for everyone else, you cannot lump a group of people together like that. Some are racist, some aren't. Do I notice if someone is black? Yeah, I'd be pretty stupid not to. Does it go any further than that? No, why should it?

So true, I don't know though. I think its good to have black history month, in one way just because of the way we've treated them through out history. This is kind of a way to say "We're really sorry, we ignored you, we treated you poorly, and we know nothing could ever make up for that, but in good spirits, we're going to take this month and learn about your history."

African-Americans are a major part of our nation's history. Without them, the country may not even be here today.

So why don't we have a Jewish History Month? Or a Japanese History Month?

I want an Irish history month, then, too, In the late 1800's and early 1900's they were treated worse than black people.
I agree with J, though. I didn't do anything, so I shouldn't have to continue to pay for it. If there is any living slave, sure, give them money, whatever, have them never pay taxes again, but their grandchildren? No. They've had an opportunity now for a better life. Everyone has.
I do, however, think that this is something we should never forget, and we should make sure that history never repeats itself. It's one thing to learn from history, but don't let it oppress you.

Because of how we have treated them? Well don't include me, in that we, because I haven't treated them any differently than I treat any other person. Don't say we. It wasn't we. It some people up to a certain time.

I noticed that, but you had gone off msn when I said, so Tommy and Dan said I was too late,
I agree with this mostly, although in some ways they don't have people to look up to, except people who helped free them, so they now don't have anyone to look up and aim for. This isn't being explained well by me, I hope people undertand.

Uh....Native Americans were treated WORSE than African Americans. Their race and way of life was pretty much annihilated. Why don't they get a month? What about all the other races that went through hell huh? You're way of thinking is not fair. "We"? Speak for yourself. You're probably feeling guitly for treating blacks badly, but I don't think anyone else here does.

Yeah the Whites who fought in the Revolutionary War were here did nothing. The Asians who built our railroads and were thrown off cliffs for fun did nothing. The countless contributions the other races made for our land.

Wow. I don't recall saying any of those things. Niiiice.
My point was: that the US wouldn't have prospered had it not been for the economy during the 1700-1800s. Who stimulated the economy? Slaves.
One of the catalysts for the civil war: slavery. Perhaps we'd have 2 countries here now.

Well there is not much i can say about black history month on my part, but it is fair all i see in this forum is who got what and what race has this or who has been hurt more. be thankful there is a black history month. other races have there part in history and they have there special weeks or days whatever they have it. we have a lot like parades other people, races, cultures although it last for one day there are a lot.
Leave it at that not many people jump for joy for black history month people like it, people remember what the people in the past have done all the good and bad stuff but that what this month is about remembering the past and how the people were strong and stuff that is my opinion and i leave it at that.
