Fri Feb 25, 2005 5:41 pm Stargate Atlantis or Battlestar Galactica? |
|
Hi all - am in a dilemma. I want to get either the Stargate Atlantis series or Battlestar Galactica series - the problem is that I can only afford one. I wondered, which is generally considered the better show.
The Battlestar DVDs feature the complete First season of the show and is 34.99 on Amazon. The Atlantis DVDs are 14.99 each on Amazon (with a total of 5 to collect throughout the year).
At the moment, I'm tempted to swing towards Battlestar since I really liked the pilot. However, from what I've seen of Atlantis (albeit very little), that looks really good as well..
Help!

I love both series, but BSG is definitely the superior one. Atlantis has potential, but the first season cannot compare to BSG's first season.

I go for Battlestar Galactica.
The deal with the blnde robot lady is that she is a cylon but she has also implanted herself into gias's brain. So she can appear infront of him at will and now one else can see he. This adds quite a bit of comedy to the show. In one episode hes doing it with her and someone walks in and of course shes really there so i just looks really weird to the other person. Another episode she broke his neck and of course he didn't die because shes in his mind.
At first i found the whole thing with her annoying but i think it is jutst SO kool

I never got into SG-1 when it was first aired and I've only recently seen the sixth and seventh seasons...
Sometimes I really like it - other times it just bores the pants off me, yet the concept of Atlantis is appealing.
What I think I might do is get Battlestar Galactica and then, when the whole season of Atlantis is released, get that then. Presumably it will work out cheaper to get the whole season set rather than the individual DVDs.
Besides, I'm in mourning at the moment. I've just read that the Babylon 5 film, "The Memory of Shadows" has been cancelled.
Excuse me while I go and cry in the corner for a while.

I'd go with that idea of yours ^ . I am a huge Stargate Atlantis fan and would most definately chose that over BSG...I tried to watch that show once and couldn't get into it for some reason, but I almost immediately attached myself to Atlantis and its great characters .

Well I bought the DVD. And now I've put it on eBay.
I don't know...there was just something about it that didn't click with me. There's didn't seem to be any emotion in it. There was no point at which I thought 'wow' - it wasn't bad but I wouldn't say it's one of my favourites.
The puddle-jumper looks too 'squat' for lack of a better word. In the shots where the camera is looking down on it flying along, it looks kinda...compressed...as though it should be longer.
Plus the fact that John Shepperd (I think that's his name) seems to be exactly the same in terms of character as O'Neill's in SG-1.
And, I thought the internal Atlantis sets looked really cheap and cardboardy...though admittedly, the CGI shots were very impressive. Particularly the ones of the city coming out of the water. Though I felt that that could have been made more dramatic somehow.

They're too different to compare directly.
Atlantis is more SF-ish, but BSG is a better drama. Take that for what you will.

www.scifi.com/battlestar had the first episode up for download (it probably still does) so I downloaded that and was completely blown away by it.
The tension in it is fantastic - sure it had action scenes in but it was more the build-up of tension rather than concentrating on a firefight. Was really impressed with this!
I took Atlantis off eBay and watched it again. I like it more now and reckon I'm probably gonna keep it but Galactica comes out tops in my book
